Chapter XXIIII.
Be not thou [ Pro_23:17; Pro_24:19; Psa_37:1 etc.; Psa_73:3.] enuious against euill men, neither desire to be with them.
[ Psa_10:7.] For their heart studieth destruction, and their lippes talke of mischiefe.
Through wisedome is an house builded, and by vnderstanding it is established.
And by knowledge shall the chambers bee filled with all precious and pleasant riches.
A wise man [ Hebrew: is in strength.] is strong, yea a man of knowledge [ Hebrew: strengtheneth might.] encreaseth strength.
[ Pro_20:18; Pro_11:14; Pro_15:22.] For by wise counsell thou shalt make thy warre: and in multitude of counsellers there is safetie.
Wisedome is too high for a foole: he openeth not his mouth in the gate.
He that deuiseth to doe euill, shall be called a mischieuous person.
The thought of foolishnesse is sinne: and the scorner is an abomination to men.
If thou faint in the day of aduersitie, thy strength is [ Hebrew: narrow.] small:
[The iust falleth.]
[ Psa_82:4 .] If thou forbeare to deliuer them that are drawen vnto death, and those that are ready to be slaine:
If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not: doth not he that pondereth the heart, consider it? and he that keepeth thy soule, doth not he know it? and shall not hee render to euery man [ Job_34:11 ; Psa_62:12 ; Jer_32:19 ; Rom_2:6 ; Rev_22:12 .] according to his workes?
[ Psa_19:9 ; Psa_119:103 .] My sonne, eate thou honie, because it is good, and the honie combe, which is sweete [ Hebrew: vpon thy palate.] to thy taste.
So shall the knowledge of wisedome be vnto thy soule: when thou hast found it, [ Pro_23:18 .] then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.
Lay not waite, (O wicked man) against the dwelling of the righteous: spoile not his resting place.
[ Psa_34:18 ; Psa_37:24 ; Job_5:19 .] For a iust man falleth seuen times, and riseth vp againe: but the wicked shall fall into mischiefe.
[ Psa_35:15 ; Pro_17:5 ; Job_31:29 .] Reioyce not when thine enemie falleth: and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth:
Lest the Lord see it, and [ Hebrew: it be euill in his eyes.] it displease him, and hee turne away his wrath from him.
[ Psa_37:1 ; Pro_23:17 .] [ Or, keepe not company with the wicked.] Fret not thy selfe because of euill men; neither be thou enuious at the wicked.
[ Pro_13:9 ; Job_21:17 .] For there shall be no reward to the euill man: the [ Or, lampe.] candle of the wicked shall be put out.
My sonne, feare thou the Lord, and the king: and medle not with [ Hebrew: changers.] them that are giuen to change.
For their calamity shall rise suddenly, and who knoweth the ruine of them both?
These things also belong to the wise: [ Lev_19:15 ; Pro_18:5 ; Pro_28:21 ; Deu_1:17 ; Deu_16:19 ; Joh_7:24 .] It is not good to haue respect of persons in iudgement.
[ Pro_17:15 ; Isa_5:23 .] He that sayth vnto the wicked, Thou art righteous, him shall the people curse; nations shall abhorre him:
But to them that rebuke him shall be delight, and [ Hebrew: a blessing of good.] a good blessing shall come vpon them.
Euery man shall kisse his lippes that [ Hebrew: that answereth right words.] giueth a right answere.
Prepare thy worke without, and make it fit for thy selfe in the field; and afterwards build thine house.
Be not a witnesse against thy neighbour without cause: and deceiue not with thy lippes.
[ Pro_20:22 .] Say not, I will doe so to him as
[Of slouthfulnesse.]
he hath done to mee: I will render to the man according to his worke.
I went by the field of the slouthfull, and by the vineyard of the man voyd of vnderstanding:
And loe, it was all growen ouer with thornes, and nettles had couered the face thereof, and the stone wall therof was broken downe:
Then I saw, and [ Hebrew: set my heart.] considered it well, I looked vpon it, and receiued instruction.
[ Pro_6:9 , etc.] Yet a little sleepe, a little slumber, a little folding of the handes to sleepe:
So shall thy pouertie come, as one that traueileth, and thy want, as [ Hebrew: a man of shield.] an armed man.
