4. Obligaciones de los Levitas.
E l capítulo se divide en dos secciones: a) orden de hacer el censo y obligaciones (1-33); b) ejecución de la orden (34-49). En muchos versos es un duplicado del anterior1.

Los Caatitas y sus Funciones (1-20).
1Yahvé habló a Moisés, diciendo: 2Haz el censo de los hijos de Caat de entre los hijos de Leví, según sus familias y linajes, 3desde los treinta años para arriba hasta los cincuenta, todos los que han de prestar servicio o cumplir alguna función en el tabernáculo de la reunión. 4Estos serán los servicios de los hijos de Caat en el tabernáculo de la reunión; consistirán en lo tocante a las cosas santísimas. 5Cuando hubiere de levantarse el campamento, vendrá Aarón y sus hijos a bajar el velo y cubrirán con él el arca del testimonio; 6pondrán encima una cubierta de pieles de tejón, y tenderán por encima de toda ella un paño de jacinto, y colocarán las barras del arca. 7Tenderán sobre la mesa de los panes de la proposición una tela de jacinto y pondrán encima de ellos los platos, los cálices, las cazoletas y los vasos de las libaciones; el pan perpetuo irá sobre ella; 8tenderán encima una tela carmesí, con que la envolverán, y una cubierta de pieles de tejón, y pondrán las barras de la mesa. 9 Tomarán una tela de jacinto, con la que cubrirán el candelabro con sus lámparas, sus despabiladeras, sus platos para los pabilos cortados, y todos los utensilios para el aceite que se emplean en su servicio, 10y con todos sus utensilios; los cubrirán de pieles de tejón y los pondrán sobre unas angarillas, 11Tenderán un paño de jacinto sobre el altar de oro y, después de cubrirlo con pieles de tejón, le pondrán las barras. 12Tomarán todos los utensilios para el servicio del santuario y, metiéndolos en una tela de jacinto, los cubrirán con pieles de tejón y los colocarán sobre unas angarillas. 13Quitarán del altar las cenizas y tenderán sobre él un paño de púrpura escarlata; 14pondrán encima de él todos los utensilios de su servicio, los braseros, los tenedores, las paletas y las bandejas, todos los utensilios del altar, y lo cubrirán con pieles de tejón y le pondrán las barras. 15Cuando Aarón y sus hijos hayan acabado de cubrir el santuario y sus utensilios todos y se levante el campamento, vendrán los hijos de Caat para llevarlos, pero sin tocar las cosas santas, no sea que mueran. He aquí lo que del tabernáculo de la reunión transportarán los hijos de Caat. 16Eleazar, hijo de Aarón, el sacerdote, tendrá bajo su vigilancia el aceite del candelabro, el timiama, la oblación perpetua y el óleo de la unción, así como todo el tabernáculo y cuanto él contiene, el santuario con todos sus utensilios. 17Yahvé habló a Moisés y a Aarón, diciendo: 18Tened cuidado de que los hijos del linaje de Caat no sean extirpados de en medio de los levitas, 19y haced de modo que tengan segura la vida y no mueran si se acercan a las cosas santísimas; sean Aarón y sus hijos los que entren para encargar a cada uno su servicio y su cargo; 20pero ellos que no entren para ver un solo instante las cosas santas, no sea que mueran.

En el capítulo anterior se hacía el censo de los levitas escogidos por Yahvé como rescate de los primogénitos; ahora se trata de los levitas que han de prestar servicio en el santuario, incluidos los de treinta a cincuenta años. El censo empieza por los caatitas, porque a ellos les concierne el servicio relativo a las cosas más preciadas del tabernáculo. En 8:23-26, la edad para entrar en servicio de los levitas es la de veinticinco años2. Quizá después cambió Moisés porque necesitaba más personal del que al principio había calculado. Los hijos de Caat debían transportar las cosas más santas del tabernáculo: el arca, la mesa de los panes de la proposición con sus utensilios, el candelabro, el altar de oro y el altar de los holocaustos. Todos han de ser recubiertos por los sacerdotes antes de ser transportados con un paño violeta (de jacinto), excepto el altar de los holocaustos, que debía ser recubierto por un paño de púrpura; y sobre ellos una piel de tejón3. Para el arca y la mesa de los panes de la proposición se añadía un paño escarlata, sin duda para distinguirlos de los demás en el traslado. Todos estos objetos debían ser transportados a mano, colocándolos sobre barras o angarillas. El arca debe ir cubierta con el velo que separaba el santo del santo de los santos (v.5). Los levitas no debían tocarlos antes de ser recubiertos, y se encarece a los sacerdotes que vigilen sobre este detalle, pues de lo contrario se expone a aquéllos a la muerte

Los Gersonitas y sus Oficios (21-28).
21Yahvé habló a Moisés y a Aarón, diciendo: 22Haz también el censo de los hijos de Gersón, según sus familias y linajes, 23haciendo el censo de treinta años para arriba, hasta los cincuenta, de todos los que han de prestar sus servicios y cumplir alguna función en el tabernáculo de la reunión. 24He aquí los servicios de los linajes de Gersón, lo que habrán de hacer y lo que habrán de llevar. 25Llevarán las cortinas del habitáculo y tienda de la reunión; su cubierta y la cubierta de pieles de tejón con que se cubren, 26las cortinas del atrio y la de la puerta de la entrada del atrio, todo lo que rodea la tienda y el altar, sus cuerdas y todos los utensilios de su servicio, y harán cuanto con ellos se ha de hacer. 27A las órdenes de Aarón y sus hijos estará el servicio de los gersonitas en todo cuanto éstos han de hacer y llevar; vosotros asignaréis a cada uno determinadamente lo que hayan de transportar. 28Este es el servicio de los linajes de Gersón en el tabernáculo de la reunión, y su vigilancia estará a cargo de Itamar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón.

Los hijos de Gersón tendrán a su cargo partes del tabernáculo menos nobles que los caatitas, pues les compete guardar y transportar los toldos y cubiertas del mismo. Todos estarán a las órdenes de Itamar, hijo de Aarón.

Los Meraritas y sus Funciones (29-33).
29Haz el censo de los hijos de Merarí según sus familias y linajes, 30contándolos desde los treinta años para arriba hasta los cincuenta, todos los adscritos al servicio y para cumplir sus funciones en el tabernáculo de la reunión. 31He aquí lo que habrán de transportar, según sus servicios, en el tabernáculo de la reunión: los tablones del habitáculo, sus traveseros, sus columnas, sus basas, 32y las columnas del atrio en derredor, con sus basas, sus estacas y sus cuerdas, y todos los utensilios de sus basas, y les indicaréis determinadamente los utensilios que han de transportar. 33Este es el oficio del linaje de los hijos de Merarí, conforme a su servicio en el tabernáculo de la reunión, bajo la vigilancia de Itamar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón.

Los meraritas deben transportar el armazón de madera del tabernáculo: columnas, travesanos, etc. En 7,8 se dice que utilizarán para ello carros. Estarán también bajo la dirección de Itamar, hijo de Aarón.

Censo de los Levitas (34-49).
34Moisés y Aarón y los príncipes de la asamblea hicieron el censo de los hijos de Caat por linajes y familias, 35de cuantos eran de treinta años para arriba hasta los cincuenta; 36y los enumerados según sus familias y sus linajes fueron dos mil setecientos cincuenta; 37éstos fueron los enumerados del linaje de los caatitas, todos los que hacían el servicio en el tabernáculo de la reunión, que Moisés y Aarón enumeraron de orden de Yahvé dada a Moisés. 38Hízose el censo de los hijos de Gersón por familias y linajes, 39desde los treinta años para arriba hasta los cincuenta, de cuantos hacían servicio en el tabernáculo de la reunión, 40y fueron enumerados por familias y linajes dos mil seiscientos treinta. 41Estos son los enumerados de los hijos de Gersón, todos los que hacían servicio en el tabernáculo de la reunión, que Moisés y Aarón enumeraron de orden de Yahvé. 42Hízose el censo de las familias de los hijos de Merarí por familias y linajes, 43desde los treinta años para arriba hasta los cincuenta, de cuantos prestaban servicio en el tabernáculo de la reunión, 44y fueron enumerados por familias tres mil doscientos. 45Estos son los enumerados de las familias de Meraií, que Moisés y Aarón enumeraron según la orden de Yahvé dada a Moisés. 46Todos los que fueron enumerados en el censo que Moisés y Aarón y los príncipes de Israel hicieron de los levitas, por familias y linajes, 47desde los treinta años para arriba hasta los cincuenta, 48todos los que prestaban servicio de ministerio o de transporte en el tabernáculo de la reunión, vinieron a ser ocho mil quinientos ochenta. 49Según la orden dada por Yahvé a Moisés, fueron designados cada uno para su propio ministerio y su propio cargo, y los designados fueron aquellos que Yahvé había mandado.

El censo de levitas comprendidos entre treinta y cincuenta años (8.580) resulta normal en la proporción respecto al número total de 22.000 primogénitos.

1 And the Lord spake vnto Moses, and vnto Aaron, saying,
2 Take the summe of the sonnes of Kohath, from among the sonnes of Leui, after their families, by the house of their fathers.
3 From thirty yeeres old and vpward, euen vntil fifty yeres old, all that enter into the hoste, to doe the worke in the Tabernacle of the Congregation.
4 This shall bee the seruice of the sonnes of Kohath, in the Tabernacle of the Congregation, about the most Holy things.
5 And when the Campe setteth forward, Aaron shall come, and his sonnes, and they shall take downe the couering Uaile, and couer the Arke of Testimony with it:
6 And shall put thereon the couering of badgers skinnes, & shall spread ouer it a cloth wholly of blew, and shall put in the staues thereof.
7 And vpon the [ Exo_25:30.] table of Shewbread they shall spread a cloth of blew, and put thereon the dishes, and the spoones, and the bowles, and couers to [ Or, poure out withall.] couer withall: and the continual bread shalbe thereon.
8 And they shall spread vpon them a clothe of scarlet, and couer the same with a couering of badgers skinnes, and shall put in the staues thereof.

11 And vpon the golden Altar they shall spread a cloth of blew, and couer it

14 And they shall put vpon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, euen the censers, the fleshhookes, and the shouels, and the [ Or, bowles.] basons, all the vessels of the Altar: and they shall spread vpon it a couering of badgers skinnes, and put to the staues of it.
15 And when Aaron and his sonnes haue made an end of couering the Sanctuary, and all the vessels of the Sanctuary, as the campe is to set forward; after that, the sonnes of Kohath shall come to beare it: but they shal not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sonnes of Kohath in the Tabernacle of the Congregation.
16 And to the office of Eleazar the sonne of Aaron the Priest, perteineth the oile for the light, and the [ Exo_30:34 .] sweet incense, and the dayly meat offering, and the [ Exo_30:23 .] anoynting oyle, and the ouersight of all the Tabernacle, and of all that therein is, in the Sanctuary, and in the vessels thereof.
17 And the Lord spake vnto Moses, and vnto Aaron, saying,
18 Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites, from among the Leuites.
19 But thus doe vnto them, that they may liue, and not die: when they approche vnto the most Holy things, Aaron and his sonnes shall goe in, and appoint them euery one to his seruice, and to his burden.
20 But they shall not goe in to see when the holy things are couered, lest they die.
21 And the Lord spake vnto Moses, saying,

26 And the hangings of the Court, and the hanging for the doore of the gate of the Court which is by the Tabernacle, and by the Altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their seruice, and all that is made for them: so shall they serue.
27 At the [ Hebrew: mouth.] appointment of Aaron and his sonnes, shall be all the seruice of the sonnes of the Gershonites, in all their burdens, and in all their seruice: and yee shall appoint vnto them in charge all their burdens.

49 According to the commandement of the Lord, they were numbred by the hand of Moses, euery one according to his seruice, and according to his burden: Thus were they numbred of him, as the Lord commanded Moses.

Tribu de Leví. La tradición israelita tuvo siempre a los levitas como los servidores exclusivos del Santuario; pero como podemos ver en Éx 25-31, hay un momento en la historia de Israel cuando los llamados descendientes del sacerdote Sadoc se las ingenian para emparentar con Aarón. Intentan aparecer como los amos y señores del Templo de Jerusalén, los únicos que podían oficiar, tocar y lucir objetos sagrados, relegando a los levitas a labores inferiores. Los levitas, sus familias y tribus, eran prácticamente sirvientes de los sacerdotes; así lo consigna el documento sacerdotal (P) en estos dos capítulos.
El argumento teológico que hace de los levitas una porción del pueblo tomada especialmente por Dios está en relación con la propiedad absoluta de Dios. El signo de aceptación es el ofrecimiento que se hace a Dios de todo primogénito. El Señor es dueño de todo el pueblo; por ello, todos deberían dedicarse exclusivamente a su servicio, aunque basta con que haya una parte representativa del pueblo consagrada a Él. Esa parte es la tribu de Leví, una especie de rescate que paga todo el pueblo (cfr. 8,22).

El censo se completa. Un total de 8.580 levitas fueron asignados al servicio activo. Evidentemente era una tarea bastante grande trasladar el tabernáculo y su mobiliario.

Nota. La primera generación de levitas pasarían toda su vida siguiendo estas instrucciones mientras viajaban por el desierto. Sin embargo, después de que Israel se estableció en Canaán su papel cambió. Los levitas vivían por todo Israel (ver material sobre 35:6-34). Cuando Jerusalén se convirtió en el lugar permanente para el tabernáculo (y más tarde del templo), los clanes de los levitas recibieron nuevas responsabilidades. David los puso a cargo de la música y otras tareas en el tabernáculo; los sacerdotes aarónicos todavía ofrecían las ofrendas (1 Crón. 6:31-49).
