Victorias de David (18:1-13 = 2Sa_8:1-18).
1 Después de esto batió David a los filisteos y los humilló, arrebatándoles de las manos Gat y las ciudades de su dependencia. 2Batió a los moabitas, que quedaron sujetos a David, pagándole tributo. 3Batió también David a Hadadezer, rey de Soba, en Jamat, cuando iba éste a establecer su dominio sobre el Eufrates. 4Le tomó David mil carros, siete mil caballeros y veinte mil infantes; desjarretó a todos sus caballos de tiro, no conservando más que los de cien carros. 5Vinieron los sirios de Damasco en socorro de Hadadezer, rey de Soba, y David derrotó a veinte mil sirios, 6puso guarniciones en la Siria de Damasco, y los sirios quedaron sujetos a David, pagándole tributo. El autor pasa por alto el castigo que infligió David a los moabitas (2Sa_8:2). Por una confusión de letras, el texto masorético lleva Hadarezer por Hadadezer (v.3). El v.8 es propio del cronista; en el 12 es Sarvia quien batió a Edom (2Sa_8:13; 1Re_11:15-16).

De los hijos de David (v.17) escribe el texto que eran los primeros al lado del rey; en Samuel dícese que los hijos de David eran sacerdotes; para el cronista, los sacerdotes eran de raza levita y no de Judá, distinguiendo entre poder político y religioso.

*18 A partir de diversos sumarios de guerra, agrupados ya en la fuente deuteronomista (2Sa 8:1-18), el cronista sitúa aquí el relato de las victorias de David, vinculándolas con lo que escribe más adelante. David no puede construir el templo, porque ha emprendido muchas guerras (1Cr 22:8). El botín de estas victorias será destinado para la construcción del templo (1Cr 18:8; 1Cr 18:11), en el que los hijos del rey no pueden ser sacerdotes (véase 2Sa 8:18) -cargo reservado a los levitas-, sino que han de contentarse con ocupar los primeros puestos junto al rey (1Cr 18:17).

Asuntos exteriores. Los filisteos, los enemigos de David desde el cap. 14, comienzan y terminan los próximos tres capítulos (18:1; 20:4-8). El cap. 18 brevemente menciona a los adversarios tradicionales de Israel al este del Jordán, Moab y Edom (2, 12, 13), pero trata mayormente con las naciones al norte de Israel, en la región de Siria moderna y del Líbano. Casi todas son hostiles, pero hay una (Hamat, como Tiro en 14:1) que es aliada. En cualquier caso, la fama de David sigue creciendo, y sus éxitos preparan la paz durante la cual Salomón edificará el templo. De la misma manera, tanto amigos como enemigos contribuyen al depósito de artículos de valor que serán los presentes de David para la casa de Jehovah (7-11). En un sentido David está descalificado para edificar el templo porque es un hombre de guerra (22:8-9), pero eso no es señal de desaprobación de Dios. A Abisai, p. ej., se le admira por su papel en la campaña contra Edom (a diferencia de 2 Sam. 8:13) porque la victoria se la dio Jehovah a David (12, 13).
