1 Moreouer Dauid and the captaines of the hoste separated to the seruice of the sonnes of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Ieduthun, who should prophesie with harps, with psalteries, and with cymbals: and the number of the workmen, according to their seruice, was:

Los cantores se agrupaban en torno de tres grandes personajes: Asaf, Hernán y Jedutún (Etán), descendientes, respectivamente, de las tres ramas levíticas de Gersón, Caat y Merarí.

Los músicos. Después de la lista del personal del santuario viene la segunda división de los levitas, la de los músicos. Además está dividida en dos maneras, primeramente de acuerdo a las tres familias de Asaf, Jedutún y Hemán (1-6), y luego de acuerdo con los 24 ciclos encabezados por sus hijos (7-31). A Hemán se le llama vidente del rey aquí (5), y lo mismo se dice de Asaf y Jedutún en otras partes (2 Crón. 29:30; 35:15); obviamente hay una conexión entre la profecía y la música, aunque la frase bajo la dirección, que tal como profetizaba que también se menciona tres veces en los vv. 1-3, demuestra que en tiempos bíblicos (ver 1 Cor. 14:26-33) los discursos y las canciones podían ser inspiradas sin estar extáticos o descontrolados.

A los primeros cinco nombres de los hijos de Hemán (4) los siguen nueve otros nombres de formas poco comunes, que en heb. suenan como versículos de los Sal.: Anané as, Hanani = Ten misericordia de mí, Señor, ten misericordia de mí y más por el mismo estilo. ¡Quizá Hemán nombró a sus hijos con sus salmos favoritos!

Los ciclos de cantores, como los ciclos de sacerdotes en 24:7-18 son 24. Listas completas en cada caso, como el sentido del v. 8 (ver 24:31; 26:13) son características del cronista, como lo es su convicción de que en el plan de Dios todo su pueblo debe reunirse.

*25 El cronista es especialmente sensible al cántico litúrgico (véase 1Cr 6:16-34). Es tan importante para él, que no duda en atribuir esta institución a David, artesano de instrumentos musicales. Los cantores profetizaban al son de la cítara (1Cr 25:3). Cuando se extingue la voz de la profecía, la música es la expresión privilegiada del culto y el medio de buscar la voluntad de Dios. Los cantores son divididos en veinticuatro turnos, como los sacerdotes (1Cr 24:7-18), con doce cantores en cada turno, a razón de dos semanas para cada turno.

Organización de los cantores. Se repite la subdivisión en 24 clases de cantores similar a los sacerdotes. Se presenta a David como fundador del canto litúrgico (1). La actividad de los cantores es descrita como profética (1-3), lo que puede significar que el canto, comparado con la profecía, era considerado como expresión privilegiada del culto y como medio de comprender a través de él la voluntad de Dios.
