1 The sonnes of Leui: [ Gen_46:11 ; Exo_6:17 .] [ Or, Gershom, ver.16.] Gershon, Kohath & Merari.
2 And the sonnes of Kohath: Amram, Izahar, & Hebron, & Uzziel.
3 And the children of Amram: Aaron, and Moses, and Miriam. The sonnes also of Aaron: [ Lev_10:1 .] Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
4 Eleazar begate Phinehas, Phinehas begate Abishua.
5 And Abishua begate Bukki, and Bukki begate Uzzi,

[The Leuites cities.]

61 And vnto the sonnes of Rohath, which were left of the family of that tribe, were cities giuen out of the halfe tribe, namely out of the halfe tribe of Manasseh, by [ Jos_21:5 .] lot, ten cities.
62 And to the sonnes of Gershom throughout their families, out of the tribe of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of Naphtali, and out of the tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteene cities.
63 Unto the sonnes of Merari were giuen by lot, throughout their families, out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, [ Jos_21:7 ; Jos_21:34 .] twelue cities.
64 And the children of Israel gaue to the Leuites these cities, with their suburbs.
65 And they gaue by lot, out of the tribe of the children of Iudah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, and out of the tribe of the children of Beniamin, these cities, which are called by their names.
66 And the residue of the families of the sonnes of Kohath, had cities of their coasts, out of the tribe of Ephraim.
67 [ Jos_21:21 .] And they gaue vnto them of the cities of refuge, Shechem in mount Ephraim, with her suburbs: they gaue also Gezer with her suburbs,
68 And Iokmeam with her suburbs, & Beth-horon with her suburbs,
69 And Aialon with her suburbs, and Gath-rimmon with her suburbs.
70 And out of the halfe tribe of Manasseh, Aner with her suburbs, and Bileam with her suburbs, for the family of the remnant of the sonnes of Kohath.
71 Unto the sonnes of Gershom, were giuen out of the family of the halfe tribe of Manasseh, Golan in Bashan with her suburbs, and Ashtaroth with her suburbs.

A los de la familia de Caat se les entregaron trece ciudades (Jos_21:19); en la lista, por la omisión de Yuta y Gabaón (Jos_21:16-17), se mencionan solamente once. Otras ciudades se entregaron a los hijos de Gersón y de Merarí (Jos_21:27-39).

La tribu de Leví. Con 81 versículos y la posición central dedicada a ella, esta tribu es evidentemente de gran importancia. Su historia (vv. 1-30) declara la razón inmediatamente. Los sumos sa cerdotes de Israel descendieron de Cohat, el segundo hijo de Leví. El sacerdocio y la monarquía forman el tema principal de Crón. Así que aquí la genealogía se sigue hasta el exilio (15); nuevamente, la continuidad es más importante que los grandes eventos que interrumpen el relato, y en este capítulo no hay tales eventos (ni siquiera el éxodo; y a Moisés se le menciona de paso no más, v. 3) excepto por -y note la importancia- la cons trucción del templo (10). Si ese detalle realmente pertenece, como muchos piensan, al v. 9, cabe exactamente en el centro de la lista, así que aquí también hay un diseño formal que subra ya la centralidad del templo y el sacerdocio. Otras ramas del árbol de familia siguen a continuación; una de ellas incluye al gran Samuel (27, 28), con tan poco énfasis como el que recibió Moisés.

La función de la tribu (31-53) se relaciona en forma similar con el punto principal, los reinados de David y de Salomón, cuando se establecieron a los tres músicos principales Hemán, Asaf y Eitán, uno de cada una de las familias levíticas (33, 39, 44). Las 12 generaciones de Aarón, los sumos sacerdotes que ofrecían los holocaustos y las ofrendas (49-53), confirman el mismo punto.

El alcance de la tribu (54-81) abarca toda la nación. Leví no tiene territorio propio como tribu, pero cada una de las otras tribus le da ciudades y tierra. Es muy típico del cronista que escriba de es ta manera cuando las condiciones eran tan diferentes; como si quisiera decir que no importa lo que pase, el principio de un sacerdocio representativo debe ser mantenido.

Descendientes de Leví - Ciudades levíticas. El texto se ocupa sobre todo de la descendencia de Quehat, la línea a través de la cual se llega a Aarón y, a partir de él, a los sumos sacerdotes hasta la época del exilio. La lista de los sumos sacerdotes sirve para confirmar la continuidad del servicio sacerdotal de Israel y legitimar el sacerdocio sadoquita (1Re_2:26s.35). La lista continúa siguiendo a Núm_3:17-20. Luego señala a los descendientes de Leví según las tareas realizadas: cantores, servidores del Templo y sacerdotes. Finalmente presenta una larga lista de poblados levíticos tomada de Gn 31 y Jos_21:5-8. Las ciudades mencionadas se encuentran en el territorio de las demás tribus.

*6:39-66 Los descendientes de Leví no tienen un territorio propio, como las demás tribus, sea porque están condenados a ser una «tribu errante», debido a los excesos de su padre Leví (véase Gén 49:5-7), sea porque «su porción es el Señor» (Núm 18:20-24). Por una u otra razón, a los descendientes de Leví se les asignan cuarenta y ocho ciudades en los territorios pertenecientes a las otras tribus (véase Núm 35:1-8). Lo peculiar de la tribu de Leví no es tanto el lugar ocupado cuanto la función que ejerce en él.
