David perdona la vida a Saúl (24:1-23).
1 Subió David y se estableció en los lugares fuertes de Engaddi. 2 De vuelta Saúl de perseguir a los filisteos, supo que David estaba en el desierto de Engaddi, 3 y, tomando tres mil hombres elegidos de entre todo Israel, iba en busca de David y los suyos por el roquedo de Jealim; 4y llegado a unos rediles que había junto al camino, entró en una caverna que allí había, para hacer una necesidad. David y sus gentes estaban en el fondo de la caverna, 5 y los hombres de David decían a éste: Ahí tienes el día que Yahvé te anunció, diciéndote que entregaría a tu enemigo en tus manos; trátale como bien te parezca. David se levantó y, acercándose calladamente, cortó la orla del manto de Saúl. 6 Luego le latía fuerte el corazón por haber cortado la orla del manto de Saúl; 7 y dijo a sus hombres: Líbreme Yahvé de hacer cosa tal contra mi señor, el ungido de Yahvé; poner mi mano sobre el que es el ungido de Yahvé. 8 Reprimió David con sus palabras a los suyos y no dejó que se echasen sobre Saúl. Levantóse luego Saúl para proseguir su camino; 9 y entonces se levantó también David y, saliendo de la caverna, se puso a gritarle: ¡Oh rey, mi señor! Saúl miró atrás, y David se echó rostro a tierra, prosternándose; 10 y dijo luego a Saúl: ¿Por qué escuchas lo que te dicen algunos de que yo pretendo tu mal? 11 Hoy ven tus ojos cómo Yahvé te ha puesto en mis manos en la caverna; pero yo te he preservado, diciéndome: No pondré yo mi mano sobre mi señor, que es el ungido de Yahvé. 12 ¡Mira, padre mío, mira! En mi mano tengo la orla de tu manto. Yo la he cortado con mi mano; y cuando no te he matado, reconoce y comprende que no hay en mí ni maldad ni rebeldía y que no he pecado contra ti. Tú, por el contrario, andas a la caza de mi vida para quitármela. 13 Que juzgue Yahvé entre mí y tu y sea Yahvé el que me vengue, que yo no pondré mi mano sobre ti. 14De los malos, la malicia, dice el proverbio; pero yo no pondré nunca mi mano sobre ti. 15 ¿Y contra quién se ha puesto en marcha el rey de Israel? ¿A quién persigues? A un perro muerto, a una pulga. 16 Juzgue y pronuncie Yahvé entre mí y tú. Que él vea, que él tome mi causa y que su sentencia me libre de tus manos. 17Cuando hubo acabado de hablar David, dijo Saúl: ¿Eres tú, hijo mío, David? Y, alzando la voz, se puso a llorar y dijo: 18 Mejor eres tú que yo, pues tú me has hecho bien y yo te pago con mal. 19 Tú has probado hoy que obras benévolamente conmigo, pues que Yahvé me ha puesto en tus manos y tú no me has matado, 20¿Quién es el que se encuentra con su enemigo y le deja seguir en paz su camino ? Que Yahvé te pague lo que conmigo has hecho hoy. 21 Bien sé ya que tú reinarás y que la realeza de Israel se afirmará en tus manos. 22Júrame, pues, por Yahvé, que no destruirás a mi descendencia después de mí y que no borrarás mi nombre de la casa de mi padre. 23David se lo juró a Saúl, y éste se volvió a su casa, y David y sus hombres subieron a un lugar fuerte.

La invasión de los filisteos impidió que Saúl se apoderara de David y de los suyos. Una vez terminada la campaña, vuelve Saúl a la carga, seguro de que esta vez capturará a David. No considerándose éste seguro en los terrenos de Maón, marchó hacia el nordeste, en dirección a Engaddi, por ser aquél un terreno más abrupto, con colinas, espesos bosques, cavernas, acantilados, profundos barrancos.
A su paso encuentra Saúl rebaños de ovejas y campamentos de pastores, situados muchas veces en las cercanías de las cuevas, que les sirven de abrigo durante la noche, les protegen de la lluvia en invierno y de los rayos del sol en verano. En una de tales cuevas entró Saúl ut purgaret ventrera, dice la Vulgata, interpretando fielmente el sentido del texto hebraico, que usa la expresión taparse los pies Que 3:24), porque durante esta operación cubríanse los judíos los pies con el manto o bordes de la túnica. Dióse la casualidad de que David, con algunos pocos de sus acompañantes, se hallasen en el interior de la caverna. David le perdonó la vida; pero, para demostrar a Saúl cuan rastrero era su proceder, se limitó a cortarle la orla del manto. Aún de esta acción tuvo graves remordimientos (literalmente: le latía fuerte el corazón; 2Sa_24:10), porque el vestido era considerado como parte de la personalidad (2Sa_18:4); quien rasgaba el vestido de otro infería una injuria a la persona.
En el supuesto de que los v.21-23 no son una adición posterior, confiesa Saúl que el reino pasará a manos de David (2Sa_15:28; 2Sa_23:17-18), pidiéndole, por consiguiente, que le confirme con juramento (2Sa_20:42) que no destruirá su descendencia. David se lo juró. Malas circunstancias eran aquéllas para confesar Saúl su derrota y afirmar el triunfo de David y su elevación en el trono. Tampoco era para David aquélla la mejor coyuntura para asegurar a Saúl el respeto hacia su descendencia. Saúl pensaba en Jonatán como sucesor suyo (2Sa_20:31). A pesar del pacto, desconfían mutuamente. Saúl vuelve a su palacio de Gueba, y David a los riscos de Maón. El autor sagrado no cuenta muchos pormenores de este dramático encuentro de David con Saúl; quizá alguno que ha recogido tiene más valor simbólico que real, a fin de ridiculizar la conducta de todo un monarca empeñado en la persecución de un perro muerto (2Sa_9:8; 2Sa_16:9) y de una pulga (2Sa_26:20). Este relato es paralelo al que se refiere en el c.26.25

Chapter XXIIII.

¹ Dauid in a caue at Engedi, hauing cut off Sauls skirt, spareth his life. ⁸ Hee sheweth thereby his innocencie. ¹⁶ Saul acknowledging his fault, taketh an oath of Dauid, and departeth.
1 And it came to passe when Saul was returned from [ Hebrew: after.] folowing the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, Dauid is in the wildernesse En-gedi.
2 Then Saul tooke three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to secke Dauid and his men vpon the rockes of the wilde goates.
3 And hee came to the sheepe coates by the way, where was a caue, and Saul went in to couer his feete: and Dauid and his men remained in the sides of the caue.
4 And the men of Dauid sayd vnto him, Beholde the day of which the Lord sayd vnto thee, Behold, I wil deliuer thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest doe to him as it shall seeme good vnto thee. Then Dauid arose, and cut off the skirt of [ Hebrew: the robe, which was Sauls .] Sauls robe priuily.
5 And it came to passe afterward, that Dauids heart smote him, because he had cut off Sauls skirt.
6 And hee sayd vnto his men, The Lord forbid that I should doe this thing vnto my master the Lords Anoynted, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the Anoynted of the Lord.
7 So Dauid [ Hebrew: cut off.] stayed his seruants with these wordes, and suffered them not to rise against Saul: but Saul rose vp out of the caue, and went on his way.
8 Dauid also rose afterward, and

9 And Dauid said to Saul, Wherfore hearest thou mens words, saying, Behold, Dauid seeketh thy hurt?
10 Behold, this day thine eyes haue seene, how that the Lord had deliuered thee to day into mine hand in the caue: and some bade me kill thee, but mine eye spared thee, and I said, I will not put foorth mine hand against my lord, for hee is the Lords Anointed.
11 Moreouer my father, See, yea see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see, that there is neither euill nor transgression in mine hand, and I haue not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soule, to take it.
12 The Lord iudge betweene me and thee, and the Lord auenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be vpon thee.
13 As saith the prouerbe of the ancients, Wickednesse proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be vpon thee.
14 After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom doest thou pursue? After a dead dogge, after a flea.
15 The Lord therfore be Iudge, and iudge betweene me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and [ Hebrew: iudge.] deliuer me out of thine hand.
16 And it came to passe when Dauid had made an ende of speaking these words vnto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my sonne Dauid? And Saul lift vp his voice, and wept.
17 And he said to Dauid, Thou art more righteous then I: for thou hast rewarded mee good, whereas I haue rewarded thee euill.
18 And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me: forasmuch as when the Lord had [ Hebrew: shut vp.] deliuered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not.
19 For if a man finde his enemie, will hee let him goe well away? wherefore the Lord reward thee good, for that thou hast done vnto me this day.
20 And now behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be King, and that

the kingdome of Israel shall be established in thine hand.
21 Sweare now therefore vnto me by the Lord, that thou wilt not cut off my seede after mee, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my fathers house.
22 And Dauid sware vnto Saul, and Saul went home: but Dauid and his men gate them vp vnto the holde.

Saúl y David, en la cueva. Sólo un fiel devoto como David podría poner tan en alto la lealtad al legítimo, aunque impopular, rey de Israel y su profundo respeto por la vida del ungido. Saúl ha estado en manos de David y, sin embargo, queda con vida; tan solo un pedazo del manto real servirá de testimonio y de prueba para que Saúl reconozca públicamente la calidad del corazón y de los pensamientos del futuro rey. Saúl reconoce lo justo del planteamiento y las razones del adversario y habla bajo el impacto de sentir que ha estado a un paso de la muerte; su llanto es mezcla de terror y arrepentimiento. Al reconocerse culpable, la causa está terminada, y no hace falta apelar al Señor juez; mejor invocar al Señor benefactor, que igualará con sus beneficios el desequilibrio de mal y bien causado por el rey. Saúl, que se ha librado de la venganza de David, quiere librarse también de la temible venganza de Dios; para ello invoca al Señor a favor de su rival y pide a éste un juramento que contrarreste la apelación del versículo 14. El autor va más lejos y aprovecha el momento para poner en boca de Saúl un acto de homenaje anticipado al futuro rey de Israel; lo decía Jonatán en 22,17. El juramento de David incluye mentalmente a su amigo Jonatán.

*17:1-31:13 El azaroso itinerario de David que lo llevó a ser ungido y reconocido como rey de Judá en Hebrón fue labrando, paso a paso, su personalidad. Comenzó por el descubrimiento de su valía frente al gigante Goliat; siguió con la maduración del joven pastor de Belén en la corte de Saúl: la amistad y alianza con Jonatán, sus éxitos militares, el matrimonio, los padecimientos por los celos y los atentados de Saúl contra su vida; y acabó con sus aventuras en compañía de un grupo de gentes apartadas de la sociedad, que le llevaron a pasarse a los filisteos.
