Durante los tres años que reyes y pueblos siguieron por el camino de David y de Salomón (v.17), prosperaron las cosas de Judá. La perspectiva del autor se fija en Judá, cuyos reyes serán llamados reyes de Israel (1Re_21:2; 1Re_28:19); el pueblo es designado por Israel (1Re_12:1; 1Re_15:17); los jefes de familia son los jefes de Israel (1Re_12:6; 1Re_15:17).

Sacerdotes y levitas en torno a Roboam (1Re_11:13-17).
13 Los sacerdotes y levitas de todo Israel venían a él de todos sus términos, 14 y dejaban sus heredades y posesiones para venirse a Judá y a Jerusalén, pues Jeroboam y sus hijos los echaban del ministerio de Yahvé. 15 El se hizo sacerdotes para los altos, para los machos cabríos y para los becerros que se habían fabricado, 16 Tras de aquéllos vinieron también, de todas las tribus de Israel, los que tenían puesto su corazón en seguir a Yahvé y Dios de Israel, para poder sacrificar en Jerusalén a Yahvé, el Dios de sus padres. 17 Así se fortaleció el reino de Judá y afirmaron a Roboam, hijo de Salomón, en el reino por tres años, pues tres años siguieron por el camino de David y Salomón.

La apostasía de Jeroboam (1Re_12:26ss) determinó que los sacerdotes y levitas de todo Israel se refugiaran en el reino de Judá, ejemplo que siguieron los que tenían puesto su corazón en seguir a Yahvé, Dios de Israel (v.16).

Familia de Roboam (1Re_11:18-23).
18 Tomó Roboam por mujer a Majalat, hija de Jerimot, hijo de David, y Abigaíl, hija de Aliab, hijo de Isaí, 19 que le parió hijos: Jesús, Semarías y Zahamzo; 20 tomó después a Maacá, hija de Absalón, que le parió a Abías, Ataí Ziza y Selomit. 21 Amó Roboam a Maacá, hija de Absalón, más que a todas sus mujeres y concubinas, pues tuvo dieciocho mujeres y sesenta concubinas, y engendró veintiocho hijos y sesenta hijas. 22 Puso Roboam a Abías, hijo de Maacá, por cabeza y príncipe de sus hermanos, pues quería hacerle rey; 23 y le hizo educar y esparció a sus otros hijos por todas las tierras de Judá y Benjamín y por todas las ciudades fuertes, dándoles bienes en abundancia y pidiendo para ellos muchas mujeres.

¹ Rehoboam raising an armie to subdue Israel, is forbidden by Shemaiah. ⁵ He strengtheneth his kingdome with forts and prouision. ¹³ The Priests and Leuites, and such as feared God, forsaken by Ieroboam, strengthen the kingdome of Iudah. ¹⁸ The wiues and children of Rehoboam.
1 And [ 1Ki_12:21, etc.] when Rehoboam was come to Ierusalem, he gathered of the house of Iudah and Beniamin, an hundred and fourescore thousand chosen men, which were warriers, to fight against Israel, that hee might bring the kingdome againe to Rehoboam.
2 But the worde of the Lord came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
3 Speake vnto Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Iudah, and to all Israel in Iudah & Beniamin, saying,
4 Thus saith the Lord; Ye shall not goe vp, nor fight against your brethren: returne euery man to his house, for this thing is done of me. And they obeyed the words of the Lord, and returned from going against Ieroboam.

13 And the Priests and the Leuites that were in all Israel, [ Hebrew: presented themselues to him.] resorted to him out of all their coasts.
14 For the Leuites left their suburbs, and their possession, and came to Iudah and Ierusalem: for Ieroboam [ 2Ch_13:9 .] and his sonnes had cast them off from executing the Priests office vnto the Lord.
15 And hee ordeined him priests for the high places, and for the deuils, and for the calues which he had made.
16 And after them out of all the tribes of Israel, such as set their hearts to seeke the Lord God of Israel, came to Ierusalem, to sacrifice vnto the Lord God of their fathers.
17 So they strengthened the kingdome of Iudah, and made Rehoboam the sonne of Solomon strong, three yeeres: for three yeeres they walked in the way of Dauid and Solomon.
18 And Rehoboam tooke him Mahalath the daughter of Ierimoth the sonne of Dauid to wife, and Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Iesse:
19 Which bare him children, Ieush, and Shamariah, and Zaham.
20 And after her, hee tooke [ 1Ki_15:2 .] Maacah the daughter of Absalom, which bare him Abiiah, and Atthai, and Ziza, and Shelomith.
21 And Rehoboam loued Maacah the daughter of Absalom, aboue all his wiues and his concubines: for he tooke eighteene wiues, and threescore concubines, and begate twentie and eight sonnes, and threescore daughters.

23 And he dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his children throughout all the countries of Iudah and Beniamin, vnto euery fenced citie: and he gaue them vitaile in abundance: and hee desired [ Hebrew: a multitude of wiues.] many wiues.

La obediencia de Roboam. Dios prohíbe otro intento de reunificar a Israel a la fuerza y hay que darle mérito a Israel porque desiste de atacar (1-4). Esta obediencia debe ser la razón para la bendición que sigue a continuación: Un programa de fortificaciones (5-12), un aumento considerable de la vida religiosa (13-17), y el crecimiento de la familia real (18-23). Parece que las ciudades fortificadas (6, 7) formaban una línea de defensa no contra el reino del norte (aunque hubo guerra constante entre Roboam y Jeroboam, 12:15), sino contra invasiones del sur (ver sobre 12:1-4). Se dice sólo lo suficiente acerca de la religión alternativa establecida por Jeroboam (ver 1 Rey. 12:25-33) para explicar el éxodo general del norte al sur de los israelitas que temían a Dios. Un becerro que representaba a Jehovah (ver Exo. 32:4) era suficientemente malo, pero se le fue la mano con los machos cabríos que representaban a algún demonio regional (15). De acuerdo con nuestros valores morales, la familia de Roboam no sólo era grande sino también tenía relaciones de consanguinidad (18, 20); aquí, en todo caso, se le considera como algo virtuoso, en vista del relajamiento de Salomón en esta área (1 Rey. 11:1-8), y en el v. 23 les buscó muchas mujeres a sus hijos es más probable que les dio ... muchas mujeres, como tienen otras versiones.

La obediencia y por lo tanto la bendición duraron por tres años (17), tiempo no suficiente como para afectar el veredicto final: hizo lo malo (12:14).

Roboán de Judá - Abías de Judá. El reinado de Roboán sigue a 1 Re 12-14 en parte. Esta sección se podría dividir en tres grandes apartados: la fase positiva del reinado de Roboán (11), la fase negativa de su reinado (12) y el contraste con la fidelidad del reinado de Abías (13).
Fase positiva (11:1-23). El reinado se introduce presentando a Roboán como fiel a la Palabra del Señor que le ordena no luchar contra Jeroboán. La lista de ciudades (5-12) es probablemente auténtica, aunque es muy seguro que las haya fortificado solo tras la invasión de Sisac, faraón de Egipto (12,1-12). Con el desplazamiento de sacerdotes y levitas (13-17) el autor quiere inculcar que el centro del culto se encuentra en Jerusalén y que los levitas fueron fieles al Templo desde el inicio.
