Joacaz, rey de Israel (13:1-9).
1 El año veintitrés de Joás, hijo de Ocozías, rey de Judá, comenzó a reinar Joacaz, hijo de Jehú, en Samaría, y reinó diecisiete años. 2 Hizo el mal a los ojos de Yahvé y siguió los pecados de Jeroboam, hijo de Nabat, con que hizo pecar a Israel, y no se apartó de ellos. 3 Encendióse el furor de Yahvé contra Israel, y los entregó en manos de Jazael, rey de Siria, y en manos de Ben Hadad, hijo de Jazael, todo el tiempo que estos reyes vivieron. 4 Joacaz imploró a Yahvé, y Yahvé le oyó, pues vio la opresión en que los reyes de Siria tenían a Israel. 5 Se. paró a Israel un libertador, que les sacó de las manos de los sirios, y habitaron en sus tiendas como antes; 6 pero no se apartaron de los pecados de la casa de Jeroboam, que había hecho pecar a Israel, sino que se dieron a ellos, y aún una asera quedaba erigida en medio de Samaría. 7 De todo el ejército que tenía Joacaz no le dejó Yahvé más que cincuenta caballeros, diez carros y diez mil infantes, porque el rey de Siria los había aniquilado, como si los redujera a polvo.8 El resto de los hechos de Joacaz, cuanto hizo, sus hazañas, ¿no está escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel? 9 Joacaz se durmió con sus padres y fue sepultado en Samaría. Le sucedió Joás, su hijo.

Reinó unos diecisiete años en Israel (814-798). Malos vientos soplaban para Israel. Retenido el rey de Asiría en su territorio por intrigas internas, tuvo Jazael las manos sueltas para oprimir a Israel, al que sólo autorizó el uso de diez carros de combate Ajab condujo dos mil a la batalla de Qarqar (853) , cincuenta caballeros y diez mil soldados. La política de Jazael inspirábase en el odio hacia Israel por no haberse unido éste a la liga contra el rey de Asiría. La misma línea política siguió su sucesor Ben Hadad III (c.797-773).
¿Quién es el libertador que se anuncia en el v.57 Algunos creen que fue Jeroboam II (14:27), en tanto que otros ven en él al monarca asirio Adadnirari. Al emanciparse de la tutela de su madre Semíramis, Adadnirari (810-782) continuó la política de penetración hacia occidente, queriendo vengarse de aquellas regiones que o bien se desuncieron del carro asirio o se negaron a continuar pagando el tributo convenido. De esta política en favor o en contra de Asiría en tierras de Siria y Palestina tenemos diversos documentos. Adadnirari cebóse con el reino de Damasco por considerarlo cabeza de la liga antiasiria y por ser el más fuerte de todos. Todo su reino fue saqueado y cercada la capital. El rey de Damasco, que Adadnirari llama con el nombre genérico de Mari, era Ben Hadad III, el cual escapó con vida pagando al de Asiría un tributo de guerra equivalente a treinta y dos millones de dólares, además de entregar telas, tejidos de algodón, camas y sillas con incrustaciones de marfil, etc. Parte de este botín ha sido hallado en Arslán Tas, la antigua Hadatu. En una placa de marfil se lee: A nuestro amo Jazael. Asiría quitó de en medio al temible reino de Damasco, pero Israel (Hu-um-ri) no pudo substraerse a la influencia de Asiría, a la que enviaba tributos. Desde el Eufrates hasta el mar Grande, donde se pone el sol, he sometido al país en Hatti y el de Amurru en su totalidad, el de Tiro, el de Sidón, el de Omri (Hu-um-ri), el de Edom y el de la Filistea. Les impuse un fuerte tributo. Tal es el texto de una inscripción perteneciente a Adadnirari III grabado en una losa encontrada en Kalak. De lo dicho aparece que los asirios libertaron parcialmente a Israel del dominio de Damasco 1.

Muerte de Elíseo (13:10-25).
10 El año treinta y siete de Joás, rey de Judá, comenzó a reinar Joás, hijo de Joacaz, en Israel, en Samaría, y reinó dieciséis años. ll Hizo el mal a los ojos de Yahvé, y no se apartó de ninguno de los pecados de Jeroboam, hijo de Nabat, que había hecho pecar a Israel, sino que se dio a éstos como él. 12 El resto de los hechos de Joás, cuanto hizo, sus hazañas, y la guerra contra Amasias, rey de Judá, ¿no está escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel? 13 Joás se durmió con sus padres, y le sucedió Jeroboam. El las tomó, y Elíseo le mandó: Hiere la tierra; y el rey la hirió tres veces, y se detuvo. 19 El hombre de Dios se irritó contra él, y le dijo: Debieras haber herido cinco o seis veces, y entonces hubieras llegado a batir a los sirios hasta la exterminación; ahora sólo tres veces los batirás. 20 Elíseo murió y fue sepultado. Por entonces hacían incursión en la tierra, un año y otro, las tropas de Moab; 21 y sucedió que, mientras estaban unos sepultando a un muerto, vieron de pronto venir una de estas tropas, y arrojaron al muerto en el sepulcro de Elíseo y se fueron; y en cuanto el muerto llegó a tocar los huesos de Elíseo, resucitó y se puso en pie. 22 Jazael, rey de Siria, afligió a Israel todo el tiempo de la vida de Joacaz. 23 Pero Yahvé tuvo misericordia de ellos y los miró por amor de su alianza con Abraham, Isaac y Jacob, y no quiso destruirlos del todo, y no los arrojó de ante sí. 24 Murió Jazael, rey de Siria, y le sucedió su hijo Ben Hadad. 25 Joás, hijo de Joacaz, reconquistó de manos de Ben Hadad, hijo de Jazael, las ciudades conquistadas por Jazael a Joacaz, su padre, durante la guerra. Joás batió tres veces a los sirios y recobró las ciudades de Israel.

Al principio del reinado de Joás (798-783), rey de Israel, hacíase sentir todavía la presión de Damasco. Pero, animado el rey por Elíseo, combatió a los árameos, venciéndolos tres veces y recuperando las ciudades perdidas durante el reinado de Jazael. Los oráculos de Elíseo (v. 14-25) se refieren a estas luchas entre Joás y Ben Hadad III. A la provocación por parte de Amasias, rey de Judá (796-781), respondió Joás batiéndolo en Bet Shemes, subiendo a Jerusalén, desmantelándola y saqueando los tesoros del templo y del palacio real.
Elíseo cayó enfermo de gravedad; murió y fue enterrado en su pueblo de Abel Mejola (teli Abu Šifri), al sur de Betsán.
Con Elíseo desaparecía un gran profeta que había actuado intensamente en la vida nacional. Yahvista fervoroso, se opuso tenazmente al culto de los baales, increpando a los reyes por su conducta religiosa. El mismo Ajab, cautivo en las mallas de su mujer, cruel y fanática, rompió sus vestiduras, se vistió de saco y ayunó cuando le anunció Elíseo el castigo por el asesinato de Nabot (1Re_21:27). Fue Elíseo un valladar ante la invasión de los profetas de Baal, procedentes de Fenicia, a quienes Elías desenmascaró sobre el Carmelo (1Re_18:26-29). Demostró hasta la saciedad que Yahvé es el único Dios que habla a los profetas. Los profetas falsos daban sus oráculos a sueldo, mientras que Elíseo se comporta desinteresadamente (1Re_5:16) 2.

9 And Iehoahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria, and Ioash his sonne reigned in his stead.
10 In the thirty and seuenth yeere of Ioash king of Iudah, beganne Iehoash the sonne of Iehoahaz to reigne ouer Israel in Samaria, and reigned sixteene yeeres.
11 And hee did that which was euill in the sight of the Lord; hee departed not from all the sinnes of Ieroboam the sonne of Nebat, who made Israel sinne: but hee walked therein.

13 And Ioash slept with his fathers, and Ieroboam sate vpon his throne: and Ioash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.
14 Nowe Elisha was fallen sicke, of his sicknesse whereof he died, and Ioash the king of Israel came downe vnto him, and wept ouer his face, and said, O my father, my father, the charet of Israel, and the horsemen thereof.
15 And Elisha said vnto him, Take bowe and arrowes. And he tooke vnto him bowe and arrowes.

haue smitten fiue or sixe times, then haddest thou smitten Syria till thou haddest consumed it: whereas now thou shalt smite Syria but thrice.
20 And Elisha died, and they buried him: And the bands of the Moabites inuaded the land at the comming in of the yeere.
21 And it came to passe as they were burying a man, that behold, they spyed a band of men, and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha: and when the man [ Hebrew: went downe.] was let downe, and touched the bones of Elisha, [ Sir_48:14 .] he reuiued, and stood vp on his feete.
22 But Hazael king of Syria, oppressed Israel all the dayes of Iehoahaz.
23 And the Lord was gracious vnto them, and had compassion on them, and had respect vnto them, because of his couenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Iacob, and would not destroy them, neither cast hee them from his [ Hebrew: face.] presence as yet.
24 So Hazael the king of Syria dyed, and Benhadad his sonne reigned in his stead.
25 And Iehoash the sonne of Iehoahaz [ Hebrew: returned and tooke.] tooke againe out of the hand of Benhadad the sonne of Hazael, the cities which he had taken out of the hand of Iehoahaz his father, by warre: three times did Ioash beat him, and recouered the cities of Israel.

Joás de Israel. Es el segundo descendiente de la dinastía de Jehú. El cronista anticipa aquí los datos ya estereotipados sobre los monarcas del norte: fecha de ascenso al trono, años que gobernó y, a pesar de sus relaciones con Eliseo, el ya conocido juicio de valor «hizo lo que el Señor reprueba» (11); finalmente, el dato sobre su muerte y la noticia de que fue enterrado en Samaría junto a los demás reyes de Israel.

Joás, rey de Israel: Resumen de su reinado. Estos versículos proveen un resumen acostumbrado del reinado de Joás. Como sus dos predecesores, él continuó en los pecados de Jeroboam (11). Su guerra contraAmasías de Judá (contada en el cap. 14) se destaca por su mención en el v. 12, pero no su derrota más importante contra los arameos (25).
