Ajaz, rey de Judá (16:1-20).
1 El año diecisiete de Pecaj, hijo de Romelía, comenzó a reinar Ajaz, hijo de Jotam, rey de Judá; 2 tenía Ajaz veinte años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó dieciséis años en Jerusalén. No hizo lo recto a los ojos de Yahvé, su Dios, como lo había hecho David, su padre. 3 Marchó por el camino de los reyes de Israel, y hasta hizo pasar a su hijo por el fuego, según las abominaciones de las gentes que Yahvé había expulsado ante los hijos de Israel. 4 Ofrecía sacrificios y perfumes en los altos, en los collados y bajo cualquier árbol frondoso. 5 Entonces Rasín, rey de Siria, y Pecaj, hijo de Romelía, rey de Israel, subieron contra Jerusalén para atacarla, y sitiaron a Ajaz, pero no pudieron vencerle. 6 En el mismo tiempo, el rey de Edom sometió a Elat al dominio de Edom, expulsando de ella a los judíos, y los edomitas se establecieron en Elat, y allí habitan hasta el día de hoy. 7 Ajaz mandó mensajeros a Teglatfalasar, rey de Asiría, para decirle: Tu siervo soy y tu hijo. Sube y líbrame de las manos del rey de Siria y de las del rey de Israel, que se alzan contra mí. 8 Ajiz tomo la plata y el oro que había en la casa de Yahvé y en el tesoro del palacio del rey y se lo mandó en presente al rey de Asiría. 9 El rey de Asiría le dio oídos, y subió contra Damasco, la tomó y llevó a sus habitantes cautivos a Quir, y dio muerte a Rasín. 10 El rey Ajaz fue a Damasco para ver a Teglatfalasar, rey de Asiría, y, habiendo visto el altar que había en Damasco, mandó luego al sacerdote Urías el modelo y la forma exacta del altar. n El sacerdote Urías construyó uno, ajustándose al modelo enviado de Damasco por el rey Ajaz, acabándole antes de que Ajaz volviese de Damasco. 12 Llegado de Damasco, vio el rey el altar, y, acercándose, subió a él; 13 hizo quemar en él su ofrenda y su holocausto, y libó en el sus libaciones y derramó en él la sangre de sus sacrificios eucarísticos. 14 Quitó de ante la casa el altar de bronce que había ante Yahvé, para que no estuviese entre el nuevo altar y la casa de Yahvé, y le puso cerca del nuevo altar, hacia el norte. 15 El rey Ajaz dio al sacerdote Urías esta orden: Quema en el gran altar el holocausto de la mañana y la ofrenda de la tarde, el holocausto del rey y su ofrenda, el holocausto de todo el pueblo y sus ofrendas; derrama en él sus libaciones y la sangre de todos los holocaustos y todos los sacrificios. Del altar de bronce ya dispondré yo. l6 El sacerdote Urías hizo en todo conforme a lo que el rey Ajaz le había mandado, 17 y el rey Ajaz rompió los tableros de las basas y quitó las fuentes que había sobre ellas. Quitó el mar de encima de los toros de bronce, que estaban debajo, y le colocó sobre un solado de piedra; 18 y para agradar al rey de Asiría, mudó de la casa de Yahvé el pórtico del sábado que se había construido en ella, y la entrada exterior del rey. 19 El resto de los hechos de Ajaz, cuanto hizo, ¿no está escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá? 20 Ajaz se durmió con sus padres y fue sepultado con ellos en la ciudad de David. Le sucedió Ezequías, su hijo.

Subió al trono en momentos difíciles, reinando desde 736-716. Hemos visto (15:23-31) que, ante la negativa de uncirse al carro de los enemigos de Asiría, invadieron su territorio los reyes de Israel y de Damasco. Rasín habíale atacado por el sur; el puerto de Elat fue entregado a los edomitas. Pecaj descendió desde el norte contra Jerusalén; en el oeste los filisteos apoderábanse de algunas de sus ciudades. Prisionero en Jerusalén, creía que había llegado la agonía de su reino. Rasín y Pecaj habían designado a Tobeel para sucedería.
Ante el cariz de los acontecimientos tembló su corazón (de Ajaz) y el corazón del pueblo como tiemblan los árboles del monte a impulsos del viento (Isa_7:2). Isaías, por encargo de Yahvé, confortóle, invitándole a confiar en Yahvé, prometiéndole cualquier milagro si fuera necesario (Isa_7:3-20); pero Ajaz confiaba más en el poderío de Teglatfalasar que en la ayuda de su Dios.
La conducta de Ajaz, desde el punto de vista religioso, fue pésima. Su sincretismo religioso culminó con el sacrificio de su hijo (hijos se dice en 2Cr_28:3). Estos ritos, condenados por la Biblia (Deu_12:31; Deu_18:10-12) por ser propios de los paganos, penetraron en Israel (Deu_23:10; Jer_7:31; Jer_19:5; Eze_16:21; Eze_20:31). No dice el texto a qué divinidad sacrificó Ajaz su hijo, pero tales holocaustos hacíanse a Moloc l.
En el v.9 se dice que los israelitas fueron llevados cautivos a Quir, lugar de donde son originarios los árameos (Amo_1:5; Amo_9:7; Isa_22:6). El altar de Damasco estaba dedicado al dios Rimmón (Isa_5:18). Instalado otro igual en Jerusalén por Urías, subió el rey en él para ofrecer sacrificios (2 Grón 28:22-23), consagrando el altar. ¿Tenía el rey derecho a ello? Tanto el gesto de Jeroboam I (1Re_12:23) como el de Ajaz son imitaciones serviles de costumbres extranjeras que el yahvismo aborrecía 2.
El altar que estaba ante Yahvé era de bronce y fue instalado por Salomón (1Re_8:64; 1Re_9:25). Según 2Cr_28:24, Ajaz reunió los utensilios de la casa de Dios y los hizo pedazos; cerró las puertas de la casa de Yahvé. El pórtico del sábado, o sea, el estrado y la entrada del rey (1Cr_9:17; Eze_46:12), eran señales de soberanía, cuya supresión exigía Teglatfalasar de su rey vasallo (De Vaux). Ajaz, como hemos visto, entregóse al culto de los falsos dioses, autorizando el politeísmo. De ello se lamentó repetidamente Isaías (Eze_2:18-20; Eze_30:22), recriminando las asheras y los cipos del sol (Isa_17:8; Isa_27:9) y el culto en los bosques y huertas (Isa_1:29).

1 In [ 2Ch_28:1.] the seuenteenth yeere of Pekah the sonne of Remaliah, Ahaz the sonne of Iotham King of Iudah began to reigne.
2 Twentie yeeres olde was Ahaz when hee began to reigne, and reigned sixteene yeeres in Ierusalem, and did not that which was right in the sight of the Lord his God, like Dauid his father:
3 But hee walked in the way of the kings of Israel, yea & made his sonne to passe through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the Lord cast out from before the children of Israel.
4 And hee sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hils, and vnder euery greene tree.

8 And Ahaz tooke the siluer and gold that was found in the house of the Lord, and in the treasures of the kings house, and sent it for a present to the king of Assyria.
9 And the king of Assyria hearkened vnto him: for the king of Assyria went vp against Damascus, and tooke it, and caried the people of it captiue to Kir, and slew Rezin.

11 And Uriiah the Priest built an altar: according to all that king Ahaz had sent from Damascus, so Uriiah the Priest made it, against king Ahaz came from Damascus.

18 And the couert for the Sabbath that they had built in the house, and the kings entry without, turned hee from the house of the Lord, for the king of Assyria.
19 Now the rest of the actes of Ahaz, which he did, are they not written in the booke of the Chronicles of the kings of Iudah?

Acaz de Judá. Desde la evaluación negativa de Salomón en 1Re_11:1-33 no habíamos vuelto a encontrar otra igual o peor contra un rey de Judá. Acaz hizo todo lo que reprueba el Señor; no sólo imitó la conducta de los reyes del norte, sino que además participó él mismo de los cultos locales que el deuteronomista y los profetas denunciaban y que todos los reyes anteriores a él apenas sí toleraron. No contento con ello, revivió una antigua costumbre de los pueblos que «el Señor había expulsado ante los israelitas» (3) y que el pueblo judío consideraba abominable hacía mucho tiempo: sacrificar en la hoguera a los hijos primogénitos.
Las políticas interna y externa están muy agitadas bajo este reinado. Ya en el reinado de Yotán, el narrador había advertido que «empezó el Señor a mandar contra Judá a Razín, rey de Damasco, y a Pécaj, hijo de Romelía» (1Re_15:37); pero es Acaz quien debe enfrentarse a estos dos enemigos. Según los historiadores, Damasco e Israel estaban presionando a Judá para conformar una coalición contra Asiria y así zafarse de su poder opresor. Sin embargo, Acaz se inclina por otra salida política: recurre directamente al poderoso del momento para solicitar protección y ayuda contra Damasco e Israel, no sin antes declararse «hijo y vasallo» del rey asirio Tiglat Piléser y de poner en sus manos un generoso presente (7s). Ni corto ni perezoso, el rey asirio atiende el llamado del desesperado rey de Judá y rápidamente se apodera de Damasco, capital de Siria, y mata al rey Razín. Sobre la suerte de Israel no se habla más en este capítulo, pero hemos de suponer que la represión aumenta. En reconocimiento a Tiglat Piléser, Acaz manda construir en Jerusalén un altar idéntico al que ha visto en Damasco, donde se debía celebrar el culto oficial al rey. Es curioso que no haya ni una sola palabra de valoración crítica a esta actuación de Acaz, ya que toca valores tan tradicionales como el Templo, el altar y el culto. Hemos de entender que en la valoración dada en los versículos 3s queda todo dicho.

5. "Resín" es el nombre hebreo de "Rasón" (15. 37) y fue el último rey de Damasco, antes de ser conquistada por los asirios. Esta coalición de Arám y de Israel contra Judá fue la ocasión en que el profeta Isaías pronunció los célebres oráculos de los caps. 7-8 de su Libro.

7-8. A pesar de la oposición de Isaías (7. 3-4), Ajaz trata de librarse del asedio declarándose vasallo de Asiria, y de esa manera prepara la ruina de su reino.

18. Probablemente, se trate de ciertos signos exteriores de soberanía, que el rey Ajaz decidió suprimir para expresar su sometimiento al rey de Asiria.

Acaz, rey de Judá: Introducción. Por primera vez desde la muerte de Atalía el autor da un informe inequívocamente malo sobre un rey de Judá. Excepto por Joram, Acaz es el único rey de Judá del cual se dice que anduvo en el camino de los reyes de Israel (3). En el caso de Joram, la frase se refería específicamente a la apostasía de Acab (2 Rey. 8:18), y parece que es lo mismo aquí ya que la apostasía (incluyendo holocaustos humanos que nunca son mencionados en la crítica de los reyes de Israel) caracterizó el reinado de Acaz.

árbol... Se refiere a árboles considerados sagrados por algún motivo, a la sombra de los cuales se realizaban ritos idólatras. Generalmente estos árboles se encontraban en los llamados lugares altos y estaban dedicados a alguna divinidad cananea tal como Baal o Asera. Este culto al árbol, iniciado en los días de Nimrod, se ha preservado hasta hoy en el tradicional árbol de navidad de las naciones llamadas cristianas.
