45. Palabras de consolación a Baruc.
Baruc nos pone un apéndice a los incidentes biográficos que acaba de consignar sobre Jeremías (c.36-44). El secretario de Jeremías se sentía desalentado por tanta adversidad e incomprensión, y Jeremías le transmite de parte de Yahvé un oráculo de consolación. La datación del cuarto año de Joaquim (e.d., 605 a.C.) es considerada como adición posterior por muchos autores. Pero los argumentos aducidos no prueban la imposibilidad de que este apéndice haya sido escrito cuando el texto lo indica. El lugar propio hubiera sido a continuación de lo narrado en el c.36, pero bien pudo trasponerlo al final de la sección biográfica de Jeremías, por él redactada para que no se perdiese el fragmento oracular de su maestro, el cual, por otra parte, no debía interrumpir el contexto general de los incidentes del profeta.

1 Palabra que dijo Jeremías, profeta, a Baruc, hijo de Nerías, cuando escribía estas cosas al dictado de Jeremías, el cuarto año de Joaquim, hijo de Josías, rey de Judá. 2 Así dice Yahvé, Dios de Israel, a ti Baruc: 3 Tú dices: ¡Ay mísero de mí, que Yahvé no hace más que añadir dolor a mi dolor! ¡Me canso de gemir, y no hallo reposo! 4 Así dice Yahvé: Dile esto: He aquí que lo que yo había edificado lo destruyo, lo que había plantado lo arranco, y esto en todo el país. 5 Y tú pides para ti grandes cosas. No las pidas, pues mientras yo hago venir males sobre toda carne, te dejo a ti salva la vida dondequiera que vas.

Baruc sufría una fuerte depresión moral, como la había sufrido su maestro Jeremías 1. Necesitaba ser confortado por Dios, como lo había sido éste. Al redactar las profecías e incidentes de su maestro, se sentía deprimido ante tanta incomprensión, ya que tenía que participar de los desprecios de que era objeto Jeremías. Por otra parte, la obcecación general llevaba inevitablemente a la catástrofe. Sólo tenía que consignar por escrito ruinas, amenazas, que llenaban el triste horizonte futuro de su pueblo. Las profecías se sucedían cada vez más sombrías, y él temía personalmente por su suerte; de ahí su queja: ¡Ay mísero de mí, que Yahvé no hace más que añadir dolor a mi dolor! (v.3). Su sentimiento patriótico le laceraba ante los tristes destinos de su nación, y su destino personal le angustiaba. Por todo se sentía en una amargura profunda, en una crisis psicológica: ¡Me canso de gemir, y no hallo reposo! (v.3).
Pero Yahvé en su mensaje le invita a la reflexión. Está en contra de los intereses personales. También Yahvé tiene llagado el corazón, ya que tiene que destruir, por imperativos de su justicia y santidad, lo que con tanto amor ha formado: He aquí que lo que yo había edificado lo destruyo, lo que había plantado lo arranco (v.4). Muy contra sus sentimientos de amor, se ha visto obligado a castigar con la ruina general a su pueblo Israel, que con tanto amor había edificado y plantado al formarlo como pueblo, sacándolo de Egipto. Todos sus desvelos han resultado inútiles. Pero su justicia es inexorable, y tiene que intervenir. Si, pues, Yahvé mismo tiene que sacrificar los íntimos sentimientos de su amor en aras de la justicia 2, ¿por qué se va a exceptuar el propio Baruc?: Y tú pides para ti grandes cosas. (v.6). Esto es pedir demasiado, ya que tiene que compartir un mínimum de penalidades. No debe poner en primer plano sus sentimientos personales y sus intereses particulares, sino pensar en las exigencias de la justicia y santidad divina. Debe contentarse ahora con salvar su vida, y por eso todavía es un privilegiado, ya que Dios le anuncia que no perecerá en la ruina general: Te dejo a ti salva la vida dondequiera que vas (v.6) 3. Efectivamente, su vida fue milagrosamente salvada en muchas circunstancias críticas: cuando tuvo que esconderse de los esbirros del rey Joaquim después de la lectura del volumen de las profecías de Jeremías4, cuando se salvó del asedio y del complot urdido contra Godolías, etc.
