Antes de entrar en la segunda parte de su libro añade el autor sagrado un apéndice sobre los reyes vencidos de TransJordania y de Cisjordania. En la primera parte resume el relato del Pentateuco acerca de los dos poderosos reyes de Transjordania batidos por Moisés (Deu_1:4; Deu_3:8-11Deu_3:-1; Deu_3:16-17), Seón y Og. Su territorio se extendía desde el torrente Arnón (Num_21:13), al sur, hasta la montaña de Hermón, al norte. No se señalan sus fronteras orientales, que se pierden en la inmensidad del desierto; pero se señala, en cambio, el Araba (Num_8:15; Num_11:2) como frontera occidental. El territorio de ambos reyes fue entregado por Moisés a los rubenitas, gaditas y a media tribu de Manases (Deu_3:12-17; Deu_29:7).

2) De Cisjordania (Deu_12:7-24).

En todo, treinta y un reyes.

Las fronteras norte y sur de Palestina iban, respectivamente, desde Baal Gad (11.16) a la montaña pelada (Gebel Halaq), de que habló el texto (Deu_11:17). En otras ocasiones, para señalar los límites de Palestina se emplea la fórmula clásica desde Dan hasta Bersabé(1Sa_3:20). Todos los reyes comprendidos dentro de estos límites habitaban, o bien en la montaña (hahar), o en el Araba en la Sefela y a lo largo de la costa del Mediterráneo.Todos ellos fueron vencidos y entregado su territorio a los israelitas. El balance de la campaña era espléndido, por cuanto quedaban los israelitas dueños virtualmente de todo el territorio de acá del Jordán. No se había realizado el vasto programa previsto en 1:4, pero el resultado de la campaña era tal que podía pensarse en la distribución del territorio entre las tribus. Esta lista de reyes es una prueba del esquematismo histórico del libro de Josué, en el que se consignan los hechos más salientes sucedidos en los largos años (yamim rabbim) que duró la entrada de Israel en Canaán1.

Apéndice: lista de los reyes derrotados

Este capítulo, que hace un resumen de los reyes que mataron los israelitas y cuyas tierras tomaron, provee una transición entre la conquista de la tierra (caps. 1-11) y su distribución (caps. 12-21). Esta lista confirma los caps. 6-11.

Josué advierte repetidamente el cambio de los antiguos reyes malvados, y sus tierras, a Dios como el nuevo gobernante y sus tribus que santificarán la tierra prometida. Este cambio ilustra varias verdades. Primera, que el reino justo de Dios legítimamente toma el lugar de los reinos injustos de este mundo que han usurpado su gobierno sobre la tie rra (ver 3:9-13; 8:30-35). Segunda, que en el tiempo del juicio Dios elimina decisivamente a los malvados. Tercera, que los malvados no pueden estar en pie frente a un ejército santo, que sigue la revelación de Dios y confía en él (1:5; 10:8). Cuarta, que el Dios eterno cumple sus promesas. Dios había hecho pacto sobre esta tierra con los patriarcas y su simiente. Ahora ha cumplido esa promesa pero no la ha consumado todavía (ver 1:6). La conquista recuerda a la iglesia que el Dios que cumple pactos dará a su pueblo los nuevos cielos y la nueva tierra, como lo prometió, y en correspondencia ellos deben esperar pacientemente su herencia (Heb. 11:39, 40). Quinta, que el pueblo unido de Dios, en este caso las tribus del occidente y oriente del Jordán, desalojan a los gobernantes ilegítimos y heredan la tierra prometida (ver 1:12-15).

Este resumen se divide en dos mitades: La conquista de Israel y el asentamiento en la tierra al oriente del Jordán (1-5), y la conquista de Josué de los reyes al occidente del Jordán (6-24).

La primera parte resume las conquistas hechas por Moisés al oriente del Jordán y el reparto de territorios a las tribus de Rubén y Gad y la media tribu de Manasés, lo cual concuerda con Núm_32:33-42. La segunda parte resume las campañas de Josué con el total de reyes que venció. El territorio queda así debidamente preparado y listo para su reparto entre las nueve tribus y media que faltan por poseerlo.
