Reyes vencidos: 1) de Transjordania (12:1-6).
1He aquí los reyes de la tierra que batió Israel, apoderándose de sus territorios, al otro lado del Jordán, a oriente, desde el torrente del Arnón hasta el monte Hermón, y todo el Araba, a oriente: 2Seón, rey de los amorreos, residente en Hesebón; su dominio se extendía desde Aroer, a orillas del torrente del Arnón, y desde el medio de este valle, sobre la mitad de Galaad, hasta el torrente de Jacob, en la frontera de los hijos de Amón; 3sobre el Araba hasta el mar de Queneret, a oriente, y sobre el mar del Araba, el mar de la Sal, a oriente, hacia Betjesimot, y del lado del mediodía, al pie de las pendientes del Pasga. 4El territorio de Og, rey de Basan, de los restos de los refaím, residentes en Astarot y en Edraí. 5Su dominio se extendía sobre la montaña de Hermón, sobre Saleja, sobre todo Basan, hasta la frontera de Garur y de Macat y hasta la mitad de Galaad, territorio de Seón, rey de Hesebón. 6Moisés, siervo de Dios, y los hijos de Israel los batieron; y Moisés, siervo de Yahvé, dio sus territorios en heredad a los rubenitas y gaditas y a media tribu de Manases.

Antes de entrar en la segunda parte de su libro añade el autor sagrado un apéndice sobre los reyes vencidos de TransJordania y de Cisjordania. En la primera parte resume el relato del Pentateuco acerca de los dos poderosos reyes de Transjordania batidos por Moisés (Deu_1:4; Deu_3:8-11Deu_3:-1; Deu_3:16-17), Seón y Og. Su territorio se extendía desde el torrente Arnón (Num_21:13), al sur, hasta la montaña de Hermón, al norte. No se señalan sus fronteras orientales, que se pierden en la inmensidad del desierto; pero se señala, en cambio, el Araba (Num_8:15; Num_11:2) como frontera occidental. El territorio de ambos reyes fue entregado por Moisés a los rubenitas, gaditas y a media tribu de Manases (Deu_3:12-17; Deu_29:7).

2) De Cisjordania (Deu_12:7-24).

En todo, treinta y un reyes.

Las fronteras norte y sur de Palestina iban, respectivamente, desde Baal Gad (11.16) a la montaña pelada (Gebel Halaq), de que habló el texto (Deu_11:17). En otras ocasiones, para señalar los límites de Palestina se emplea la fórmula clásica desde Dan hasta Bersabé(1Sa_3:20). Todos los reyes comprendidos dentro de estos límites habitaban, o bien en la montaña (hahar), o en el Araba en la Sefela y a lo largo de la costa del Mediterráneo.Todos ellos fueron vencidos y entregado su territorio a los israelitas. El balance de la campaña era espléndido, por cuanto quedaban los israelitas dueños virtualmente de todo el territorio de acá del Jordán. No se había realizado el vasto programa previsto en 1:4, pero el resultado de la campaña era tal que podía pensarse en la distribución del territorio entre las tribus. Esta lista de reyes es una prueba del esquematismo histórico del libro de Josué, en el que se consignan los hechos más salientes sucedidos en los largos años (yamim rabbim) que duró la entrada de Israel en Canaán1.

1 The two kings whose countreys Moses tooke and disposed of. 7 The one and thirty kings on the other side Iordan which Ioshua smote.
1 Now these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land on the other side Iordan, toward the rising of the Sunne: from the riuer Arnon, vnto mount Hermon, and all the plaine on the East.

Conquista de Josué de la tierra al occidente del Jordán. La tierra que conquistó Josué es aproximadamente del tamaño del estado de Vermont en los Estados Unidos de América o Gales en la Gran Bretaña.

7, 8 Josué y los hijos de Israel en el v. 7 se equipara con Moisés ... y los hijos de Israel en el v. 6. (Para Baal-gad, ver sobre 11:17.) La lista en tér minos generales sigue los relatos de la conquista como se presentan en los caps. 6-11 y los completa. En ese tiempo, Israel tenía su campamento en Gilgal y todavía no se había establecido en la tierra ni ocupado sus ciudades.

9-24 Estos reyes gobernaban sobre pequeñas ciudades-estado cuyo territorio se extendía solamente unos 5 km. alrededor de la ciudad fortificada. En el 668 a. de J.C., después de su primera campaña en Siria-Palestina, Asurbanipal cobró tributo de 33 reyes.

Reyes de Transjordania y de Cisjordania. Encontramos una síntesis de todos los territorios conquistados por los israelitas. La primera parte resume las conquistas hechas por Moisés al oriente del Jordán y el reparto de territorios a las tribus de Rubén y Gad y la media tribu de Manasés, lo cual concuerda con Núm_32:33-42. La segunda parte resume las campañas de Josué con el total de reyes que venció. El territorio queda así debidamente preparado y listo para su reparto entre las nueve tribus y media que faltan por poseerlo.
