Herencia de la tribu de Judá (15:1-12).
1La parte que en suerte tocó a la tribu de los hijos de Judá, según sus familias, se extendía hasta la frontera de Edorn, en el desierto de Sin, al mediodía por el confín meridional. 2Su frontera meridional partía desde la extremidad del mar de la Sal, de la parte de este mar que se vuelve hacia el sur, 3y se prolongaba al mediodía de la subida de Acrabim; pasaba a Sin y subía al mediodía de Cadesbarne; pasaba a Esrón, subía hacia Adar y se volvía a Carcaá; 4pasaba luego a Asmón y continuaba hasta el torrente de Egipto, para morir en el mar. Esta os será la frontera meridional. 5La frontera oriental fue el mar de la Sal hasta la desembocadura del Jordán. La frontera septentrional partía de la parte del mar de la Sal donde desemboca el Jordán, 6 subía hacia Bet Agía, pasaba al norte de Bet Araba, subía hasta la peña de Boén, hijo de Rubén; 7seguía subiendo a Deberá, a partir del valle, a Ajor, y volvía hacia el norte del lado de Gálgala,que está al frente del monte de Adomim, al sur del torrente; pasaba a En Semes y llegaba a En Rogel; 8de allí subía por el valle de Ben Hinón, viniendo por el mediodía hasta tocar el límite de Jebús, que es Jerusalén, y subía luego por la cima del monte que está frente al valle de Hinón, a occidente, y al extremo del valle de Refaím, al norte. 9 Desde la cima del monte se inclinaba hacia los manantiales de agua de Neftoá, seguía hacia las ciudades de la montaña de Efrón y se volvía en dirección a Bala, que es Quiriat-Jearim. 10De Bala se volvía la frontera a occidente, hacia el monte Seir; pasaba por la vertiente septentrional del monte Jarim, que es Quesalón; bajaba a Betsemes y pasaba por Timna; 11continuaba al norte por la vertiente de Acarón y se dirigía hacia Secrona; pasaba por el monte de Bala y llegaba a Jabnel, para morir en el mar. 12La frontera occidental era el mar Grande; éste era el límite. Estas fueron las fronteras de los hijos de Judá según sus familias.

A Judá había prometido su padre Jacob la hegemonía sobre las otras tribus. (Gen_49:8-12). En la repartición del territorio hecha por Josué en Gálgala corresponde la primacía a Judá, que recibe una herencia superior a la de cualquiera otra tribu. Con una gran abundancia de detalles, que no se encuentran en la fijación de los límites de las otras tribus, se describen sus fronteras del sur y del norte, este y oeste. Sin embargo, no todo el territorio que se le asigna estaba pronto para la ocupación, ya que el establecimiento de los filisteos en las costas del Mediterráneo le impedía asomarse al mar. Por el sur confinaba con Edom (Num_20:1455), desierto de Sin, en la región de Cadesbarne (Num_20:1; Deu_32:51), Jasar Adar (Num_34:4), en el actual Ain el-Qaderatt continuando por el wadí eí-Arísh, o torrente de Egipto, hasta el Mediterráneo. La frontera septentrional arrancaba de la orilla septentrional del mar Muerto, subía hacia Bet Agía (Num_18:19), al noroeste de la desembocadura del Jordán. Pasaba al norte de Bet Araba (Num_18:22), que puede identificarse quizá con Ain Gharba, al sur de Gálgala. La línea fronteriza pasaba por Deberá (el wadi Debr), al este de Neby Musa, valle de Ajor (Num_7:24) y subida de Adumim, a veinte kilómetros al este de Jerusalén, en la actual carretera de Jerusalén a Jericó; pasaba por Ain Semes, hoy día llamada Ain el-Hod, al noreste de Betania, y llegaba a Ain Rogel (1Re_1:9), situada al sur de Jerusalén. De allí, por el valle de Bene Hinón, tocaba el límite sudoeste de Jerusalén. Continuaba la frontera por el valle de Refaím, al sudeste de Jerusalén. Desde la cima del monte, la línea seguía hacia las aguas de Neftoá, actual Lifta, y Baala, Quiriat-Jearim (1Re_9:17). De allí se inclinaba un poco hacia el sur hasta Bet Semes y Timna, remontando de nuevo en dirección noroeste hasta alcanzar el mar Mediterráneo por el nahr-Rubín. La ciudad de Jerusalén pertenecía a la tribu de Benjamín. La proximidad de los límites entre ambas tribus hizo que la ciudad se atribuyera unas veces a Judá y otras a Benjamín Que 1:21).

Digresión sobre Caleb (15:13-20).
13Se había dado a Caleb, hijo de Jefoné, una parte en medio de los hijos de Judá, como Yahvé se lo había mandado a Josué; Quiriat-Arbé, del padre de Enac, que es Hebrón. 14Caleb arrojó de allí a los tres hijos de Enac: Sesai, Ajuman y Tolmar, descendientes de Enac. 15De allí subió contra los habitantes de Dabir, que se llamaba antes Quiriat Sefer. 16Caleb dijo: Al que bata y tome Quiriat Sefer le daré por mujer a mi hija Acsa.17La tomó Otoniel, hijo de Quenaz, hermano de Caleb, y éste le dio su hija Acsa por mujer. 18Cuando iba ella a la casa de Otoniel, incitóla éste a que pidiera a su padre un campo; bajóse ella del asno, y Caleb le dijo: ¿Qué tienes? 19Ella le respondió: Hazme un don; pues que me has heredado en tierra de secano, dame también tierra de regadío. El le dio el Gulot (Fuentes) superior y el inferior.

El v.20 de este capítulo es continuación de lo dicho en el v.12. Entre los dos intercala el escritor sagrado el episodio de Caleb y Otoniel. Ya dejamos dicho que Caleb, edomita, en premio de su fidelidad, recibió una parte en medio de los hijos de Judá (14:9; Deu_1:36). Como había asegurado a Josué, Caleb tenía fuerzas suficientes para arrojar de Hebrón a los enaquim. En Dabir, conquistada por Josué (Deu_10:39; Deu_10:11-21; Deu_12:13; Jue_1:11-12), quedaban núcleos de enemigos; Caleb prometió su hija por esposa al que batiera y tomara la ciudad. Lo hizo Otoniel (Jue_3:7-11). Se dice que éste era hijo de Quenaz, hermano de Caleb; pero en otros lugares se le llama hijo de Sefoné (Jue_14:6; Jue_15:13), por lo cual debe darse a la palabra hermano un sentido amplio de pariente; o acaso se llaman hermanos por representar dos clanes de quenecitas. Cuando Acsa se dirigía a casa de su esposo, pidió, a instancias de éste, una bendición a su padre, con lo cual se significaba una parcela de terreno de regadío (Gen_33:11). Caleb accedió, concediéndole dos manantiales de agua, ed-Dilbeh, a unos diez kilómetros al sudoeste de Hebrón.

Ciudades del territorio de Judá (Gen_15:20-63).

Se citan las ciudades del Negueb, de la costa, de la Sefela y de la región montañosa con sus anejos. Los hijos de Judá no entraron inmediatamente en posesión de todas las ciudades aquí citadas, teniendo que luchar largo tiempo para apoderarse de algunas de ellas. Se considera a Jerusalén como dependiente de Judá, conviviendo con los jebuseos, a los que no pudieron expulsar (Jue_1:21). En el v.59b inserta el texto griego una lista de once poblados cercanos a Jerusalén, que no figuran en el texto masorético (Baldi, Fernández, Ubagh).

1 This then was the lot of the tribe of the children of Iudah by their families, [ Num_34:3.] euen to the border of Edom; the [ Num_33:36.] wildernesse of Zin Southward, was the vttermost part of the South coast:
2 And their South border was from the shore of the salt sea, from the [ Hebrew: tongue.] bay that looketh Southward.

3 And it went out to the Southside to [ Or, the going vp to Acrabbim.] Maalehacrabbim, and passed along to Zin, and ascended vp on the Southside vnto Kadesh-Barnea: and passed along to Hezron, and went vp to Adar, and fetched a compasse to Karkaa.
4 From thence it passed toward Azmon, and went out vnto the riuer of Egypt, and the goings out of that coast were at the sea: this shalbe your South coast.
5 And the East border was the salt Sea, euen vnto the end of Iordan: and their border in the North quarter, was from the bay of the sea, at the vttermost part of Iordan.

El narrador dice claramente por qué define las herencias de las tribus con tanto detalle: para mostrar que Dios cumple sus promesas (21:43-45). Estas definiciones precisas de las herencias de las tribus son un claro recordatorio de que Dios cumplió sus promesas de dar al pueblo de su pacto la tierra digna de reyes. El v. 1 vuelve al asunto del 11:23.

Primero, se delimitan sus fronteras: al sur (1-4), al oriente (5a), al norte (5b-11) y al poniente (12).
La parte en el v. 1 se refiere a echar la suerte (ver 13:1-7). Como un presagio de la futura grandeza y liderazgo de Judá (Gén. 49:10; Jue. 1:1, 2; 20:18), se menciona primero su parte al occidente del Jordán (15:2-12).

Luego se menciona la heredad de Caleb (15:13-19), enfatizando una vez más cómo desposeyó a los antiguos habitantes para tomar posesión del don como un ejemplo para otros (ver 14:6-15 y no tar la similaridad de 14:15 y 15:13). Caleb mismo desalojó a los anaquitas de Hebrón y prometió su hija en matrimonio al hombre de fe semejante que tomara Debir (
cf. 1 Sam. 17:25; 18:17). Otoniel, su sobrino (cf. Jue. 1:13), ganó tanto la tierra prometida como la novia, como hizo Cristo (cf. Ef. 5:25; Heb. 4:1-14). Pidiendo audazmente a su padre, la hija de Caleb ganó fuentes de agua codiciadas (cf. Luc. 11:1-13). Esta historia, vv. 13-19, no se presenta en orden cronológico. Caleb y Otoniel tomaron sus ciudades como parte de la campaña que se registra en 10:36-39.

Finalmente, se registraron las ciudades cananeas incluidas en la distribución, una por una (
cf. Deut. 6:10, 11), de acuerdo con la geografía de Judá. Primero el Néguev (21-32), luego las colinas del occidente (33, 34) y las costas habitadas por los filisteos (45-47). Luego por la región montañosa entre Jerusalén y Hebrón (48-60) y el desierto ha cia el mar Muerto (61, 62). Estas regiones se dividieron más adelante en 11 distritos. Obsérvese cómo casi cada una termina con un total de las ciudades incluidas (32, 36, 41, 43, 47, 51, 54, 57, 59, 60, 62).

63 Aunque Josué había matado al rey de Jerusalén (10:1, 22-27), los judíos no pudieron desalojar a los jebuseos de Jerusalén. De hecho, sin embargo, la frontera norte de Judá (15:8) corría a lo largo de la ladera sur de Jebús (antigua Jerusalén) y por lo tanto no incluía a la ciudad misma que pertenecía a Benjamín (ver 18:16, 28; Jue. 1:21).
