Entre este apéndice y el anterior existen analogías evidentes. Los expositores han puesto de relieve que en el texto actual de este segundo apéndice se vislumbra la intervención de varias manos. Cómo y cuándo alcanzó su forma definitiva, no es posible determinarlo con certeza. Se habla de la yuxtaposición de dos narraciones antiguas; de un redactor posterior que combinó el relato más antiguo con otro sacerdotal completamente independiente o de un relato antiguo elaborado y dispuesto por un escritor perteneciente a los círculos sacerdotales 1.
En cuanto a los fines del autor, este apéndice entra en el plan teológico que se ha propuesto desarrollar. En primer lugar, el episodio deja entrever claramente el estado de anarquía reinante, en oposición a los tiempos de la monarquía davídica. Pero, a pesar de ello, Dios se interesa por su pueblo pecador y corre en su ayuda a la más leve señal de arrepentimiento (v.21-14). No son los pueblos extranjeros los que infligen un castigo a la tribu prevaricadora, sino la comunidad de Israel. Había crímenes que Israel no podía tolerar, tales como violar las costumbres sobre la hospitalidad, forzar una virgen, consentir perder la virginidad antes del matrimonio, apropiarse de las cosas consagradas a Yahvé por el herem (Desnoyers, I 297). Pero para que Israel lleve a feliz término las guerras de Yahvé contra los prevaricadores tiene necesidad de purificarse en la lucha y en el sufrimiento. Estas son las dos lecciones morales que se desprenden de este segundo apéndice· la noción de prueba (3:1-6) y la fidelidad de Yahvé.

El levita de Efraírn y su concubina (19:1-10).
1Sucedió por aquel tiempo, cuando no había rey en Israel, que un levita que peregrinaba en el límite septentrional de los montes de Efraím tomó por mujer a una concubina de Belén de Judá. 2Se disgustó con él la concubina y le dejó para irse a la casa de su padre, a Belén de Judá, donde se estuvo por espacio de cuatro meses. 3Su marido, llevando consigo un mozo y dos asnos, se encaminó donde ella estaba para hablarle al corazón y reducirla. Hízole entrar ella en la casa de su padre, que al verle salió muy contento a recibirle. 4 Instóle su suegro, el padre de la joven, y se quedó allí por tres días, comiendo, bebiendo y pasando la noche allí. 5Al cuarto día se levantó de mañana y se dispuso a marchar; pero el padre de la joven dijo a su yerno: Toma antes un bocado de pan, para refocilarte, y luego partirás. 6Sentáronse ambos y comieron y bebieron; y el padre de la joven dijo al marido: Anda, quédate hoy a pasar aquí la noche alegremente. 7Levantóse el marido para marcharse, pero le instó su suegro, y se quedó a pasar la noche allí. 8Levantóse de mañana el día quinto, para emprender la marcha; y le dijo el padre de la joven: Anda, toma un refrigerio y diferid la marcha hasta el caer del día; y se pusieron a comer juntos. 9Levantóse el marido para marcharse él, la concubina y el mozo; pero el suegro, el padre de la joven, le dijo: Mira, comienza ya a caer la tarde; anda, pasad la noche aquí, que el día se acaba ya; pasa aquí la noche, que se te alegre el corazón, y mañana os levantáis bien temprano para volveros a tu casa, 10El marido rehusó pasar allí la noche, se levantó y partió. Llegó frente a Jebús, que es Jerusalén, con el par de asnos y la concubina.

Este levita habitaba como guer en la parte norte de Efraím (17:8; 18:2), lo que revela que el escritor escribía desde Judá. Tomó como concubina (8:31), o mujer de segundo orden (Gen_22:24), a una de Belén (Gen_17:7). No se sabe el porqué, pero lo cierto es que la mujer se enojo fuertemente contra él, lo abandonó y se marchó a casa de sus padres. Al cabo de cuatro meses, el buen levita, acompañado de un siervo y con dos asnos, se fue a Belén para reconciliarse con ella. La acogida fue cálida, tanto de parte de su mujer como de parte de su suegro (hoten). Después de muchas tentativas de éste para retenerle por más tiempo en su casa, el levita, con su mujer, emprendió el viaje de regreso a su casa.

Etapa en Gueba (Gen_19:11-21).
11Cuando estaba cerca de Jebús, el día había ya bajado mucho, y dijo el mozo a su amo: Será mejor que nos desviemos hacia la ciudad de los jebuseos, para pasar allí la noche. 12El amo le respondió: No, no torceremos hacia la ciudad extraña? en la que no hay hijos de Israel; 13lleguemos a Gueba; y añadió: Anda, vamos a acercarnos a uno de esos dos lugares, y pasaremos la noche en Gueba o en Rama. 14Prosiguiéronla marcha, y al ponerse el sol llegaron cerca de Gueba de Benjamín. 15Tomaron, pues, hacia allá, para pasar la noche en Gueba. Entraron y se sentaron en la plaza de la ciudad; y no hubo quien los admitiera en su casa, para pasar en ella la noche. 16Llegó en esto un anciano que venía de trabajar en el campo; era un hombre de los montes de Efraím, que se hallaba en Gueba; los habitantes del lugar eran benjaminitas. 17Cuando, al levantar los ojos, vio al viajero en la plaza de la ciudad, le dijo: ¿Adonde vas y de dónde vienes? 18El le contestó: Vamos de Belén de Judá al límite septentrional de los montes de Efraím, de donde soy yo. Había ido a Belén de Judá y voy a mi casa, pero nadie me admite en su casa. 19Sin embargo, tenemos paja y forraje para los asnos, y también pan y vino para mí, para tu sierva y para el mozo que acompaña a tus siervos; no necesitamos nada. 20El anciano le dijo: Sea contigo la paz; de cuanto te es necesario te proveeré yo; no te quedes en la plaza. 21Hízolos entrar en su casa y dio forraje a los asnos. Laváronse los pies los viajeros y después comieron y bebieron.

A las dos horas de haber salido llegaron los viajeros a la vista de Jerusalén, que dejaron a la derecha, por encontrarse en poder de los jebuseos (Jos_15:8-68), y siguieron hacia adelante con el fin de hospedarse en una ciudad israelita al norte de Jerusalén. Esta se llamaba Urusalim, Jerusalén ya en el siglo XV a. de C., mucho antes de la ocupación israelita, y sólo más tarde llamóse Jebús (1Cr_11:4-5). Llegaron los viajeros a Gueba de Benjamín (1Sa_13:41; I5-34); actualmente Tell-el-Full, a seis kilómetros al norte de Jerusalén, y decidieron pernoctar allí. Según la costumbre, el grupo de viajeros sentóse en la plaza (Gen_19:2), esperando que alguien les ofreciera hospitalidad; pero nadie los invitó, a pesar de ser la hora en que las gentes regresaban de sus labores del campo. Al fin, un anciano efraimita, después de haberse cerciorado de dónde venían y adonde iban, les acogió benévolamente en su casa. Después de lavarles los pies (Gen_18:4; Gen_19:2; Gen_24:23), acto que se consideraba como necesario por razón de que se andaba con sandalias o con los pies desnudos, les sentó en su mesa.

Horrendo crimen de los guebaítas (Gen_19:22-30).
22Mientras estaban refocilándose, los hombres de la ciudad, gente perversa, aporrearon fuertemente la puerta, diciendo al anciano dueño de la casa: Sácanos al hombre que ha entrado en tu casa, para que le conozcamos. 23El dueño de la casa salió a ellos y les dijo: No, hermanos míos, no hagáis tal maldad, os lo pido; pues que este hombre ha entrado en mi casa, no cometáis semejante crimen. 24Aquí están mi hija, que es virgen, y la concubina de él; yo os las sacaré fuera para que abuséis de ellas y hagáis con ellas como bien os parezca; pero a este hombre no le hagáis semejante infamia. 25Aquellos hombres no quisieron escucharle, y entonces el levita cogió a su concubina y la sacó fuera. La conocieron y estuvieron abusando de ella toda la noche, hasta la mañana, dejándola al romper la aurora. 26 Al venir la mañana, cayó la mujer a la entrada de la casa donde estaba su señor, y allí quedó hasta que fue de día. 27 Su marido se levantó de mañana y abrió la puerta de la casa para salir y continuar su camino, y vio que la mujer, su concubina, estaba tendida a la entrada de la casa con las manos sobre el umbral. 28 El le dijo: Levántate y vamos; pero nadie respondió. Púsola entonces el marido sobre su asno y partió para su lugar. 29Llegado a su casa, cogió un cuchillo y la concubina y partió miembro por miembro, en doce trozos, que mandó por toda la tierra de Israel. 30 Y a los enviados encargó que dijeran a todos los israelitas: ¿Se ha visto jamás tal cosa desde que los hijos de Israel subieron de Egipto hasta el presente? Miradlo bien, deliberad y resolved. A su vista decían todos: Jamás ha sucedido cosa parecida ni se ha visto tal desde que los hijos de Israel subieron de Egipto hasta hoy.

Estando ellos refocilándose en su mesa, he aquí que los hombres de la ciudad, hijos de Belial (Deu_13:13), se acercaron a la casa y, aporreando fuertemente la puerta, decían al anciano dueño de la misma: Sácanos a la mujer (texto masorético: al hombre) que ha entrado en tu casa, para que le conozcamos (Gen_19:1-8). La expresión hijos de Belial (1Sa_1:16; 1Sa_2:12; 1Sa_10:27; Sal_18:5) equivale a decir hombre perverso, dañino, nefasto. El nombre indica una potencia infernal, el jefe de los demonios (2Co_6:15). Según el texto hebreo, se habla aquí de un crimen de sodomía, pecado muy extendido entre la gente nómada. Pero, por el contexto, aparece que los hombres de la ciudad reclamaban la mujer del levita. De hecho, en la declaración de éste (2Co_20:5) no alude al crimen de sodomía, y los hombres del pueblo mostráronse satisfechos una vez les entregó su joven mujer. Es posible que un escriba cambiara el texto, escribiendo ish en vez de isha, para hacer más horrendo el crimen de los guebaítas y acaso por influencia de la historia de Lot (Gen 19), con la cual presenta sorprendente analogía. El anciano, para cumplir con los deberes sagrados de la hospitalidad (Gen_19:6-8), prefiere entregarles su propia hija antes que a la mujer del levita. Aquella violación de las leyes de la hospitalidad era una villanía en Israel (Gen_34:7; Deu_22:21), que acarreaba necesariamente consigo un castigo ejemplar. El crimen de Gueba pasó a la historia de Israel como tipo de una perversidad extrema (Ose_9:9; Ose_10:9)·
A la mañana siguiente (Gen_19:15), el levita, al abrir las puertas de la casa para seguir su viaje, encontró a su concubina tendida a la entrada de la casa con las manos en el umbral. Al verla muerta, púso la sobre su asno y marchóse a su casa. Allí la partió en doce trozos, que mandó por toda la tierra de Israel. Acción análoga practicó Saúl (1Sa_11:7). La finalidad del levita con esta partición macabra del cadáver de su mujer fue la de inspirar horror, encender la indignación del pueblo e incitarlo a la venganza. El número doce no está en relación con las doce tribus.

Chapter XIX.

28 And he said vnto her, Up, and let vs be going. But none answered: then the man tooke her vp vpon an asse, and the man rose vp, and gate him vnto his place.
29 And when he was come into his house, hee tooke a knife, and layd hold on his concubine, and diuided her, together with her bones, into twelue pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.
30 And it was so that all that saw it, said, There was no such deed done nor seene, from the day that the children of Israel came vp out of the land of Egypt, vnto this day: consider of it, take aduise, and speake your mindes.

La violación en Gabaa

Aparte de dar la chispa para la acción principal que sigue, este episodio inicial sirve dos propósitos mayores. Muestra cuánto había llegado a degradarse en Israel, durante el período de los jueces, incluso algo tan noble como la hospitalidad; y arroja bastante luz sobre el carácter del levita, que va a desempeñar un papel clave en el segundo episodio.

Hay dos escenas aquí que involucran hospitalidad. La primera, en Belén (1-10), es bastante normal; pero la segunda, en Gabaa (11-28), es pervertida y grotesca, con similitudes inequívocas a la descripción de la vida en Sodoma en Gén. 19:1-13. Esto es irónico, particularmente porque los viajeros a propósito habían evitado ciudades paganas para buscar hospitalidad con sus coterráneos israe litas (12-14). La gente desordenada y ruidosa en las calles de Gabaa claramente estaba en quiebra moral, pero también lo estaba el anciano que abrió su casa a los viajeros. Fue este anfitrión, aparente mente modelo, cuyo sentido pervertido del deber lo condujo a concebir la idea de echar a dos mujeres inocentes a aquellos hombres despreciables (23, 24). Ciertamente aquí hay bancarrota moral. Cuando el pueblo de Dios hace lo que le parece recto a sus propios ojos, no es mejor que los sodomitas.

Sin embargo, el levita es el más pervertido de todos. Después de haber echado fuera a su concubina, se retiró a descansar y aparentemente no pensó más en ella hasta que la encontró muerta o incons ciente sobre el umbral por la mañana. Luego, con una insensibilidad casi increíble, le dijo que se levantara porque él estaba listo para salir (27, 28). Este era el hombre que convocaría a todo Israel a la guerra en el siguiente episodio. En mirada retrospectiva, podemos entender muy bien por qué su concubina encontró imposible vivir con él (ver v. 2 y nota).

Notas. 1 Para la región montañosa de Efraín, ver sobre 4:5. Tomar una concubina era práctica común en el antiguo Cercano Oriente y estaba permitido de acuerdo con la ley del AT (Exo. 21:7-11; cf. Gén. 16:2-5; 29:24, 29; Jue. 8:31; 2 Sam. 5:13). Una concubina era normalmente una segunda esposa o una esposa sin una dote normal y, por lo tanto, de una posición inferior. Contrástese con la madre de Jefté, que era una prostituta (11:1). Belén de Judá, el lugar de nacimiento de Jesús, estaba a 9 km. al sur de Jerusalén. Cf. 17:7, y contrastar la Belén del norte de 12:8. 2 Su infidelidad parece ha ber consistido solamente en abandonar a su marido. No hay sugerencia de relaciones con otros hombres.10 JebuŒs era el nombre preisraelita para Jerusalén. Ver v. 11 y cf. 1:21. 12 Gabaa estaba a 5 km. al norte de Jerusalén, en el territorio de Benjamín. Ver v. 14 y cf. Jos. 18:28. 13 RamaŒ estaba a 3 km. al norte de Gabaa. 18 Mi casa: La casa del Señor (ver nota de la RVA) era probablemente el santuario en Silo (ver sobre 18:31). Pero la LXX tiene mi casa (como traduce la RVA), que hace mejor sentido en el contexto y bien puede representar la lectura original.

El crimen de Guibeá. Con la historia del levita y su concubina, entramos a un mundo de terror. La indignación de Guibeá está rodeada de misterio y ambigüedad. Dios permanece en silencio en toda la historia. En esta narración no hay intervención divina para salvar a la concubina, como en el caso de Lot (Gén_19:8), posiblemente porque la protagonista es una mujer. No aparece ningún mensajero celestial como en el caso de Gedeón (Gén_6:12) y de la madre de Sansón (Gén_13:3); tampoco aparece ningún ángel (Gén_2:1-5) o profeta (Gén_6:7-10) que hablen a favor de la pobre muchacha. Dios no suplica ni argumenta (Gén_10:11-14), ni envía a un salvador (Gén_3:9). Parece que Dios hubiese encontrado en el sacrificio de la concubina la mejor manera de castigar a todo el pueblo por su idolatría.
En las sociedades nómadas la hospitalidad hacia los extranjeros era una obligación sagrada. La historia de Lot y del anciano de Guibeá constituye una evidencia clara de lo importante que era la protección del huésped. Lot prefirió ofrecer a sus hijas vírgenes a los sodomitas (Gén_19:8), y el anciano de Guibeá hará lo mismo para poder salvar el honor de su huésped. La historia del levita hace eco, casi literalmente, de la historia de Lot (Gén_19:1-9), con algunas diferencias. Muchas personas han querido encontrar tanto en la historia de Sodoma, como en esta historia una condenación a la «homosexualidad». Debemos evitar el anacronismo al interpretar la Biblia. La palabra homosexual aparece recién en el s. XIX. En estas dos historias el verdadero crimen es la inhospitalidad, violencia y agresión fálica contra los extranjeros. En ambas historias, el falo sirve como arma de agresión que establece la relación de dominio y sumisión, prácticas muy usadas en las guerras.
