4. Sacrificios Expiatorios.
L os sacrificios expiatorios no son mencionados en la historia primitiva de Israel. Son los que se ofrecen en expiación de los pecados. El hombre que se siente ligado por la voluntad del Señor, se siente también muchas veces en desgracia con El por las infracciones de la Ley divina, y así busca, por medio del sacrificio, aplacar a Dios y volver a recuperar su gracia. La Ley distingue dos sacrificios de esta índole: por el pecado y por el delito. En ambos predomina la idea de reparación, mientras en los anteriores (holocaustos, pacíficos y oblaciones) predominaba la idea de reconocimiento de la soberanía de Dios. Homenaje de entrega y de acción de gracias.
Los seguidores de Wellhausen sostienen que esta legislación relativa a los sacrificios por el pecado y por el delito es posterior al destierro o arranca de la escuela sacerdotal de Ezequiel1. Pero en 2Re_12:16 se hace alusión a la existencia de estos sacrificios expiatorios, y las ordenaciones de Ezequiel suponen ya una legislación sobre el particular2. Por otra parte, esta noción de sacrificio expiatorio no es desconocida de las antiguas poblaciones de Canaán3. En los textos de Ras Samra aparece el sacrificio pro delicto (asam), y parece que hay otro equivalente al pro peccato4. En el texto púnico de la tarifa de Marsella aparece también un sacrificio semejante5. Lo mismo parece deducirse de los exvotos míneos y sábeos6. Entre los babilonios existían estos sacrificios de tipo expiatorio7. De todo esto se deduce que la legislación levítica sobre los sacrificios expiatorios (pro delicio et pro peccato) no es algo postizo de época reciente, sino que enraiza con costumbres semíticas muy arcaicas, y bien pueden llegar a los tiempos mosaicos.

Sacrificio por el Pecado del Sumo Sacerdote (1-12).
1Yahvé habló a Moisés, diciendo: 2Habla a los hijos de Israel y diles: Si pecare alguno por ignorancia, haciendo algo contra cualquiera de los mandatos prohibitivos de Yahvé e hiciera alguna de estas cosas: 3si es el sacerdote ungido el que peca, haciendo así culpable al pueblo, ofrecerá a Yahvé por su pecado un novillo sin defecto en sacrificio expiatorio. 4Llevará el novillo a la entrada del tabernáculo de la reunión ante Yahvé, y, después de poner la mano sobre la cabeza, lo degollará ante Yahvé. 5El sacerdote ungido tomará la sangre del novillo y la llevará al tabernáculo de la reunión, 6y, mojando un dedo en la sangre, hará siete aspersiones ante Yahvé hacia el velo del santuario; 7untará de ella los cuernos del altar de los perfumes y derramará todo el resto de la sangre del novillo en torno del altar de los holocaustos, que está a la entrada del tabernáculo de la reunión. 8Tomará luego el sebo del novillo sacrificado por el pecado, el sebo que cubre las entrañas y cuanto hay sobre ellas, 9los dos ríñones con el sebo que los cubre, y el que hay entre ellos y los lomos, y la redecilla del hígado sobre los ríñones, 10como se coge en el novillo del sacrificio pacífico, y lo quemará en el altar de los holocaustos. 11La piel del novillo, sus carnes, la cabeza, las patas, las entrañas y los excrementos, 12lo llevará todo fuera del campamento a un lugar puro, donde se tiran las cenizas, y lo quemará sobre la leña. Se quemará en el lugar donde se tiran las cenizas.

El sacrificio por el pecado (en heb, jaita) era en expiación de los pecados cometidos por ignorancia hacia algo contra los mandatos prohibitivos de Yahvé (v.2). Es un pecado, pues, involuntario por error, haciendo alguna de las cosas prohibidas por Yahvé. Es en contraposición del pecado cometido con mano alzada,8 que una oposición abierta y escandalosa contra la autoridad de Dios, es decir, los pecados con malicia expresa, los cuales son castigados con la muerte. Aquí se trata de expiar los pecados de fragilidad, no sólo las faltas culturales, o faltas de pura inadvertencia9. En hebreo, jaita, etimológicamente, significa faltar, no dar en el blanco, ser defectuoso; pero prácticamente designa todo acto que no se amolda a las reglas del bien y de los mandatos de Yahvé. El ceremonial distingue en los sacrificios por el pecado: si el pecador es el sumo sacerdote, si es la asamblea del pueblo, o un príncipe del pueblo, o una persona privada. Naturalmente, la categoría del sacrificio varía según la categoría de la persona oferente. En el primer caso, es el del sacerdote que ha recibido la unción, es decir, el sumo sacerdote, como traducen los LXX Üñ÷éåñåý?10. Por ser el representante religioso de la comunidad israelita, su pecado es particularmente grave, y por ello necesita una expiación especial, ya que en su persona la culpabilidad afecta a todo el pueblo. Como expiación de su pecado debe ofrecer un novillo, recogiendo su sangre, con la que untará los ángulos del altar de los perfumes y derramará el resto en torno del altar de los holocaustos. El sebo de la víctima lo quemará en el lugar donde se tiran las cenizas. Como en los sacrificios anteriores, la inmolación era precedida de la imposición de las manos sobre la víctima. El significado del rito parece que está relacionado con la transmisión del pecado a la víctima y la sustitución de ésta a aquél ante Yahvé. Ante el velo del santuario debía hacer siete aspersiones de sangre. Sólo el día solemne de la expiación podía el sumo sacerdote entrar detrás del velo en el santo de los santos.11 Después se ungían con la sangre los cuernos del altar de los perfumes (v.7), y el resto de la sangre se derramaba al pie del altar de los holocaustos. Las partes grasas se quemaban sobre el altar como en los sacrificios pacíficos (v.10), y el resto, piel, carnes, patas, etc., se quemaba fuera del campamento (v.12). Era la destrucción total de la víctima, de forma que el oferente no se apropia nada de ella. Aquí lo que no es entregado a Dios en el altar es consumido por el fuego fuera del campamento. Como el oferente tenía conciencia de pecador, no podía tener el banquete sagrado con las partes salvadas de la combustión del altar, como en los sacrificios pacíficos. En este sacrificio, el oferente, lejos de estar movido de sentimientos de alegría, debe sentirse penitente y triste, y, además, no debe sacar provecho de una víctima ofrecida por sus pecados. Por otra parte, como las partes de la víctima no quemadas sobre el altar eran algo sagrado, no debían ser profanadas, y por ello se quemaban fuera en un lugar prescrito12. El autor de la Epístola a los Hebreos ve en esta circunstancia de la cremación de la víctima fuera del campamento un tipo del sacrificio del Cristo muerto fuera de Jerusalén como víctima expiatoria por nuestros pecados13.

Sacrificio por la Asamblea del Pueblo (13-21).
13Si fuera la asamblea toda del pueblo la que por ignorancia pecare, sin darse cuenta, haciendo algo que los mandatos de Yahvé prohíben, incurriendo así en culpa, 14al darse cuenta la asamblea del pecado cometido, ofrecerá en sacrificio expiatorio un novillo, que se llevará a la entrada del tabernáculo de la reunión.15Los ancianos de la asamblea pondrán sus manos sobre la cabeza del novillo y le degollarán ante Yahvé; 16el sacerdote ungido llevará la sangre del novillo ante Yahvé en el tabernáculo de la reunión, 17y, mojando su dedo en la sangre, aspergerá siete veces ante Yahvé en el tabernáculo de la reunión, 18y la derramará al pie del altar de los holocaustos, que está a la entrada del tabernáculo de la reunión. 19Luego tomará todo el sebo del novillo y lo quemará en el altar, 20haciendo con este novillo como con el novillo anterior. Así los expiará el sacerdote y les será perdonado. 21Llevará el novillo fuera del campamento y lo quemará como el anterior. Este es el sacrificio por el pecado de la asamblea de los hijos de Israel.

El ritual es similar al anterior. Aquí el pueblo es considerado corporativamente como solidario en el pecado, al descuidar el cumplimiento de los preceptos de Yahvé. Por ello debe ofrecer un sacrificio de expiación. No se especifica cómo la asamblea del pueblo llegaba a tener conciencia de su pecado, quizá por la proclamación de alguna persona representativa, como el sacerdote. La víctima a ofrecer es la misma que la del sumo sacerdote. Los ancianos harán la imposición de las manos sobre la víctima antes de la inmolación como representantes netos del pueblo. El sumo sacerdote aspergerá con la sangre siete veces como en el caso anterior (v.17). Después se quemará el sebo y partes grasas sobre el altar y el resto será quemado fuera del campamento14.

Sacrificio por el Pecado de un Jefe (22-26).
22Si el que pecó es un jefe del pueblo, haciendo por ignorancia algo de lo que los mandamientos de Yahvé, su Dios, prohiben, incurriendo así en culpa, 23al darse cuenta del pecado cometido, llevará como ofrenda un macho cabrío sin defecto; 24pondrá su mano sobre la cabeza y lo degollará en el lugar donde se degüellan los holocaustos a Yahvé; es sacrificio por el pecado. 25El sacerdote mojará su dedo en la sangre de la víctima y untará de ella los cuernos del altar de los holocaustos, y la derramará al pie del altar. 26Después quemará todo el sebo en el altar, como se quema en los sacrificios pacíficos. Así le expiará el sacerdote de su pecado, y le será perdonado.

Ahora la víctima es modesta, en conformidad con la categoría del nuevo pecador, que es un jefe político o militar, un personaje de alguna influencia en la vida social. La víctima es el macho cabrío, y el ritual, semejante al anterior, si bien la unción con la sangre es sobre los cuernos del altar de los holocaustos y no de los perfumes, como en los casos anteriores. Y el que hace las unciones no es el sumo sacerdote (sacerdote ungido, v.16), sino un sacerdote cualquiera (v.26). Se quemarán las partes grasas sobre el altar, pero no se especifica el destino de las otras partes de la víctima, que en los anteriores sacrificios debían ser quemadas fuera del campamento. Por Lev_6:29-30 sabemos que esa carne debían comerla los sacerdotes en un lugar sagrado.

Sacrificio por el Pecado de un Israelita (27-35).
27Si el que por ignorancia pecó es uno del pueblo, haciendo algo que Yahvé ha prohibido hacer, e incurriendo así en culpa, 28al caer en la cuenta de su pecado, llevará en ofrenda una cabra sin defecto, hembra, por el pecado cometido; 29pondrá su mano sobre la cabeza de la víctima por el pecado y la degollará en el lugar donde se ofrecen los holocaustos. 30El sacerdote mojará su dedo en la sangre de la víctima, untará en ella los cuernos del altar de los holocaustos y la derramará al pie del altar. 31Después, tornando el sebo, como en el sacrificio pacífico, lo quemará en el altar en suave olor a Yahvé. Así le expiará el sacerdote, y le será perdonado. 32Si lo que ofrece en sacrificio por el pecado es un cordero, llevará una cordera sin defecto, 33pondrá su mano sobre la cabeza de la víctima por el pecado y la degollará en sacrificio de expiación en el lugar donde se ofrecen los holocaustos. 34El sacerdote mojará su dedo en la sangre de la víctima y untará de ella los cuernos del altar de los holocaustos, y derramará la sangre al pie del altar. 35Después, tornando el sebo, como en el sacrificio pacífico, lo quemará en el altar sobre las combustiones de Yahvé. Así le expiará el sacerdote por el pecado cometido, y le será perdonado.

Si se trata de un particular, la víctima es también de inferior categoría, ya que es una hembra, cabra u oveja. En Num_15:27 se dice que la víctima debe ser de un año. El ritual es semejante al anterior: imposición de manos por el oferente pecador, unción con su sangre de los cuernos del altar de los holocaustos y cremación del sebo en el altar sobre las combustiones de Yahvé (v.35). La frase es extraña, y algunos autores ven aquí una alusión a un sacrificio recientemente ofrecido, como el holocausto cotidiano o perpetuo.

[Offerings for sinnes of ignorance.]

1 And the Lord spake vnto Moses, saying,
2 Speake vnto the children of Israel, saying, If a soule shall sinne through ignorance against any of the commandements of the Lord (concerning things which ought not to bee done) and shall do against any of them:
3 If the Priest that is anointed, doe sinne according to the sinne of the people, then let him bring for his sinne which he hath sinned, a yong bullocke without blemish, vnto the Lord for a sinne offering.
4 And hee shall bring the bullocke vnto the doore of the Tabernacle of the Congregation before the Lord, and shall lay his hand vpon the bullockes head, and kill the bullocke before the Lord.
5 And the Priest that is anointed, shall take of the bullocks blood, and bring it to the Tabernacle of the Congregation.
6 And the Priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle of the blood seuen times before the Lord, before the Uaile of the Sanctuary.
7 And the Priest shall put some of the blood vpon the hornes of the Altar of sweet incense before the Lord, which is in the Tabernacle of the Congregation, and shal powre [ Lev_5:9 .] all the blood of the bullocke at the bottome of the altar of the burnt offering, which is at the doore of the Tabernacle of the Congregation.
8 And he shall take off from it all the fat of the bullocke for the sinne offering: the fat that couereth the inwards, and all the fat that is vpon the inwards.

22 When a ruler hath sinned and done somewhat through ignorance against any of the Commandements of the Lord his God, concerning things which should not be done, and is guilty:
23 Or if his sinne wherein hee hath sinned, come to his knowledge: he shall bring his offering, a kid of the goates, a male without blemish.
24 And hee shall lay his hand vpon the head of the goate, and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt offering before the Lord: it is a sinne offring.

25 And the Priest shall take of the blood of the sinne offering with his finger, and put it vpon the hornes of the Altar of burnt offring, and shall powre out his blood at the bottome of the Altar of burnt offering.
26 And he shall burne all his fat vpon the Altar, as the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings: and the Priest shall make an atonement for him, as concerning his sinne, and it shall be forgiuen him.
27 And if [ Hebrew: any soule.] any one of the [ Hebrew: people of the land.] common people sinne through ignorance, while he doeth somewhat against any of the commandements of the Lord, concerning things which ought not to be done, and be guiltie:

Por el pecado del sumo sacerdote. El sacerdote ungido es más que seguro que en este contexto se refiere al sumo sacerdote (cf. Núm. 35:25). A causa de su función representativa, cuando él pecaba todo el pueblo resultaba contaminado con su culpa. El ocupaba una posición de gran seriedad y, por lo mismo, la ofrenda de purificación por su pecado era la más costosa de todas; es decir, un novillo. Y dado que él vivía y trabajaba en la presencia de Dios y en su santuario, su pecado introducía corrupción hasta el lugar donde Dios habitaba. Así que la purificación tenía que llevarse a cabo a la entrada del tabernáculo.

Cuando se traía el novillo, el sacerdote tenía que poner su mano sobre la cabeza del animal (v. 4), de la misma manera que lo hacían los otros adoradores cuando traían para el sacrificio sus animales a los sacerdotes. El significado era el mismo. El novillo cargaría con los pecados, moriría en su lugar. La sangre del novillo sería derramada por la vida del sacerdote, purificaría el lugar donde servía y removería la amenaza contra la gente que él representaba.

En este punto (vv. 5-7), la acción de la sangre difiere de lo que se hacía en otros sacrificios. En los holocaustos y en las ofrendas de paz, la sangre se rociaba hacia el altar para hacer expiación por el pecado del adorador. Aquí, algo de la sangre se recogía en un vaso y era llevada dentro del tabernáculo de reunión, pero no hasta el santuario (eso sólo sucedía en el día de la Expiación, Lev. 16). Ahí, algo de la sangre se rociaba sobre el velo que dividía el tabernáculo en dos y ocultaba la santa presencia de Dios (Exo. 26:31-37), y otro poco se rociaba sobre los cuernos del altar donde continuamente se quemaba incienso (Exo. 30:1-10). Los cuernos eran proyecciones verticales encima de las cuatro esquinas del altar. Después el resto de la sangre se derramaba en las afueras del tabernáculo, al pie del altar del holocausto. Las partes grasosas del animal se quemaban sobre el altar (así como en la ofrenda de paz, vv. 8-10), pero todo el resto del animal se quemaba fuera del campamento (vv. 11, 12). Dado que el sacrificio era por el pecado del sumo sacerdote, e indirectamente por todo el pueblo, nada de su carne se debía comer, ni por el sacerdote ni por la gente.

Primero, el holocausto (Lev 1:1-17), palabra griega que significa «quemado por completo» (en hebreo se le llama ‘olah, un término relacionado quizá con una raíz cuyo significado es «subir», en humo hasta Dios). Segundo, la oblación vegetal (Lev 2:1-16), menos estimada que el sacrificio cruento, porque al derramamiento de sangre se atribuía especial fuerza expiatoria (Lev 17:11), pero también válida para la expiación (véase Lev 5:11-13). Tercero, el sacrificio de comunión (Lev 3:1-17), que se dice en hebreo shelamim o zebaj shelamim, donde shelamim significa el banquete sacrificial que sella una alianza. Quinto, el sacrificio de reparación, ‘asham, similar al anterior, hasta el punto de que resulta difícil diferenciarlos. La razón de los sacrificios expiatorios o de reparación está en que no se puede obtener el favor de Dios sin expiar antes los pecados y sin limpiarse de las impurezas que se contraen cometiéndolos.

Sacrificios de expiación. La cuarta clase de sacrificios estipulada en Levítico tiene como finalidad restablecer las relaciones rotas con Dios por el pecado. No se trata de pecados cometidos intencionalmente -de lo que se hablará después-, sino de faltas inadvertidas que atentan contra la pureza ritual y cultual.
La preocupación básica era que la presencia de Dios era incompatible con la impureza, la cual podía ser contraída aun de manera inadvertida. Aquí no se subraya tanto el aspecto ritual del sacrificio, aunque se estipula de hecho la aspersión y la quema de algunas partes del animal para resaltar más la calidad de las personas, que se catalogan en: sumos sacerdotes (3-12), toda la comunidad israelita (13-21), un jefe (22-26) y alguien del pueblo, el cual podía optar entre ofrecer una cabra o una oveja (27-35).
La intención es siempre la misma: la purificación mediante la expiación. Conviene resaltar que, de acuerdo a la categoría de la persona, su falta puede llegar a contaminar a todo el pueblo y de este modo poner en peligro a toda la nación, como es el caso del sumo sacerdote (3).
