26. Nuevo Censo de Israel.
E n el Sinaí se hizo el primer censo del pueblo, el cual nos dio la misma cifra de varones mayores de veinte años que leímos en Exo_12:37, a 1a salida de Egipto: 603.250. La sentencia dada por Dios condenaba a morir en el desierto a los mayores de veinte años1. La peregrinación por el desierto duró cuarenta años. Por eso, los que ahora son sometidos a censo constituyen otra generación, un pueblo nuevo. Como estaban a punto de entrar en Canaán y de repartirse la tierra entre las tribus, era preciso un nuevo empadronamiento, y se precisaba saber cuántos eran capaces de empuñar las armas para la conquista de la tierra prometida.

Orden de Confeccionar el Censo (1-4).
1Después de esta plaga habló Yahvé a Moisés y a Eleazar hijo de Aarón, sacerdote, diciéndoles: 2Haced el censo de los hijos de Israel por sus casas patriarcales y sus linajes, de veinte años arriba, de los hábiles para el servicio de las armas. 3Moisés y Eleazar, sacerdote, hablaron al pueblo en los llanos de Moab, cerca del Jordán, frente a Jericó, diciendo al pueblo: 4aHágase el censo de los de veinte años para arriba, como Yahvé se lo mandó a Moisés.

La orden es similar a la dada para el primer censo, y como en el primero aparece Aarón, aquí es su sucesor, Eleazar, el que ayuda a Moisés en la ardua tarea. El autor menciona la intervención de los representantes de la familia aaronítica en la formación del pueblo israelita. La lista es más compleja, ya que no sólo se nombra al jefe o príncipe de la tribu, como en el primero2, sino que se dan listas genealógicas de las familias, que son paralelas a las que leemos en otros lugares3. La grafía a veces es diversa en las diversas genealogías, como lo es en el Pentateuco Samaritano y los LXX, lo que se debe a errores o principios de trasliteración diferentes.

Censo de Tribus y Familias de Israel (4-5l).
4bLos hijos de Israel salidos de la tierra de Egipto: 5Rubén, primogénito de Israel. Hijos de Rubén: de Henoc, la familia de los henoquitas; de Falú, la familia de los faluitas; 6de Esrón, la familia de los esronitas; de Carmí, la familia de los carmitas. 7Estas son las familias de los rubenitas, y fueron contados cuarenta y tres mil setecientos treinta. 8Hijos de Falú, Eliab; 9hijos de Eliab: Namuel, Datan y Abirón. Se contaron cuarenta y cinco mil cuatrocientos. 51Los hijos de Israel incluidos en el censo fueron: seiscientos un mil setecientos treinta hombres.

Las cifras particulares de las tribus y familias varían algo respecto de las cifras del censo anterior, pero la suma total es sólo menor en 1.820 varones. En efecto, han descendido Rubén, Simeón, Gad, Efraím y Neftalí, pero han subido Judá, Isacar, Zabulón, Manasés, Benjamín, Dan y Aser. También subió en un millar el número de los levitas (v.57-62). Esto significa que, a pesar de los azotes con que Dios los castigó, se conservó firme la promesa de la multiplicación de Israel (v.63-65). Tal debe ser la primera intención del autor sagrado al redactar este censo. Otra, que se halla consignada expresamente en el texto, es preparar el reparto de la tierra prometida, el cual debía hacerse según la cifra de los individuos que componían cada familia o clan, dando más parte a las familias más numerosas (v.53). En esta cuenta no entraba la tribu de Leví, que tendría por heredad a Yahvé, es decir, los emolumentos de su servicio, que pertenecían a los sacerdotes; más el diezmo de las otras tribus, que era de los levitas4.
La primera tribu es la de Rubén, por ser el primogénito5. Tiene 2.700 menos que el primer censo, quizá por el número de los que perecieron con Datan y Abirón6. La tribu de Simeón da también un censo inferior de 37.100 menos. Como uno de los principales causantes de la prevaricación de Baalfegor fue un simeonita, sin duda que perecieron muchos de esta tribu en aquella mortandad. La tribu de Gad tiene en el nuevo censo 5.150 menos. En cambio, la tribu de Judá aumenta en número: 1.900 más. La de Isacar aumenta en 19.900; la de Zabulón aumenta en 2.900; la de Manasés aumenta en 20.500; en cambio, la de Efraím disminuye en 8.000. La de Benjamín aumenta en 9.800. La de Dan aumenta 1.700; la de Aser aumenta 12.900; en cambio, la de Neftalí disminuye en 8.000. El total del nuevo censo es de 601.730, frente a 603.550 del anterior. La suma, pues, es casi idéntica a pesar de las vicisitudes del desierto. Gomo hemos indicado al comentar el primer censo, todas estas cifras están sistemáticamente exageradas por el procedimiento literario de la glorificación e idealización del pasado. Para aproximarnos a la realidad habría que suprimir dos ceros a las diferentes cifras, y entonces todavía tendríamos la cifra respetable de unos 6.000 varones aptos para la guerra, prescindiendo de los de la tribu de Leví. La cifra de guerreros que da el texto no la tuvo Alejandro Magno, y quizá ni el propio Jerjes. Es la suma de la movilización total moderna de una nación de unos 8.000.000 de habitantes.

Instrucciones Sobre la Repartición de la Tierra Prometida (52-56).
52Habló Yahvé a Moisés, diciéndole: 53A éstos repartirás la tierra en heredad, según el número de sus hombres. 54A los más numerosos les darás una parte mayor; a los menos numerosos, una parte menor. A cada uno le será atribuida la heredad según el censo. 55La distribución de la tierra se hará, sin embargo, por suertes. Recibirá cada una la tierra según los nombres de las familias patriarcales. 56Por suertes se distribuirá la tierra entre el mayor y el menor.

El legislador quiere ser justo en la distribución de la tierra, que en Num_33:51 es la de Canaán. Dos principios deben regir la distribución: a) según el número de individuos de cada tribu se determinaba la extensión de cada porción; b) por suertes se determinaba la región que correspondía a cada una. Este sistema de suertes evitaba toda susceptibilidad o favoritismo, y, dada la mentalidad de los antiguos, la suerte era la expresión de Dios: en el seno se echan las suertes, pero es Yahvé quien da la decisión7.
Y aparece que a suertes se debían echar los lotes de cada clan dentro de la misma tribu (v.55). Aún hoy día en Palestina los terrenos comunales son divididos en lotes según su dimensión y calidad, y después se echan a suerte, utilizando pequeñas piedrecitas O con el nombre del posible adjudicatario.

Censo de los Levitas (57-62).
57Este es el censo de los levitas por sus familias: de Gersón, la familia de los gersonitas; de Caat, la familia de los caatitas; de Merarí, la familia de los meraritas. 58Estas son las familias de Levi: la familia de los libnitas, la familia de los jebronitas, la familia de los majlitas, la familia de los musitas, la familia de los coreítas. Caat engendró a Amram, 59y la mujer de Amram se llamaba Yokebed, hija de Leví, que le nació a Leví en Egipto, 60y le parió a Amram, Aarón y Moisés, y María, hermana de éstos. De Aarón nacieron Nadab y Abiú, Eleazar e Itamar. 61Nadab y Abiú murieron cuando ofrecían a Yahvé el fuego profano. 62Hecho el censo de todos los varones de un mes para arriba, se contaron veintitrés mil. No se contaron entre los hijos de Israel, porque no había de asignárseles heredad alguna en medio de los hijos de Israel.

Como los levitas no tenían derecho a una heredad o lote territorial en la tierra prometida, no se hizo el censo de ellos con el conjunto de la tribu. Se enumeran las tres familias levíticas conocidas por textos anteriores8 y otras cinco no registradas anteriormente, pero cuyos epónimos nos son conocidos9. La familia de Caat es más prolijamente detallada, porque de ella provienen Moisés y Aarón, forjadores de la teocracia hebraica. El número total de levitas es de 23.000, es decir, un millar más que en el censo anterior10.

Conclusión (63-65).
63Este es el censo que hicieron Moisés y Eleazar, sacerdote, en los llanos de Moab, junto al Jordán, frente a Jericó. 64Entre éstos no había ninguno de los enumerados en el censo que habían hecho en el desierto del Sinaí, 65pues les había dicho Yahvé que morirían en el desierto; no quedó ni uno, excepto Caleb, hijo de Jefoné, y Josué, hijo de Nun.

El autor sagrado destaca cómo en el nuevo censo no quedaba ninguno, excepto Caleb, Josué y el propio Moisés. Los levitas, que no habían sido incluidos en el primer censo11 y no habían participado en la exploración de Canaán12, no caían bajo la maldición de morir en el desierto. Así, Eleazar entra en la tierra prometida como auxiliar de Josué.

Nuevo censo. A las puertas de la tierra prometida, terminada prácticamente la travesía, se hace necesario un nuevo censo por dos motivos: primero, para comprobar que ninguno de la primera generación estuviese presente (64s); y segundo, para repartir la tierra por tribus (53s).
Si se compara el número de los censados en el Sinaí (603.550 en 1,46) con el censo de las estepas de Moab (601.730 en 51), la diferencia es muy pequeña (sólo 1.820 personas). Sin embargo, en el versículo 62 se registran 23.000 varones mayores de un mes que, aunque no se consignaron con los demás israelitas, nos da idea de que la población había aumentado en lugar de disminuir, pese a las muertes registradas en el desierto. Ésta puede ser la intencionalidad teológica del capítulo: la fidelidad providente de Dios y su compromiso con la vida. A pesar de que las circunstancias del desierto y el comportamiento de Israel hubieran podido terminar con la completa desaparición del pueblo, ese compromiso y esa fidelidad de Dios han hecho que la vida progrese y no retroceda. De modo que en tiempos de crisis y de amenaza contra la vida, esta escena, que aparentemente es inabordable por su extensa relación de nombres, se convierte también en un mensaje esperanzador para el pueblo.

*25:19-26:56 La generación del primer censo (Núm 1:1-54) ha perecido por el desierto. En vísperas de entrar en la tierra prometida, el autor cree necesario hacer un nuevo censo, para preparar la conquista y el reparto de la tierra. Este censo es más detallado que el de Núm 1:1-54, pues incluye los clanes de las tribus. El número total de los censados es prácticamente igual que en Núm 1:1-54.

Se ordena un segundo censo. Esta fue la manera en que se inició la primera preparación. El nuevo censo fue una señal de que el período de juicio estaba concluyendo y que era tiempo para prepararse de nuevo para entrar a la tierra prometida. El censo se llevó a cabo sobre la misma base del primero (26:2 repite brevemente 1:2).
