El poema se mueve entre la altanería y la humildad, entre el desprecio y la piedad. Los orgullosos (4) son altaneros: miran hacia lo alto, tratando de conquistar mayor grandeza, aunque sea anulando a otros, despreciándolos (3b-4). Quien está postrado como esclavo o esclava dirige una mirada confiada a la mano de su señor o señora. Es una mano que no amenaza, sino que concede favores. La mirada del esclavo va más allá: levanta lo ojos a quien está entronizado en el cielo (1). De él espera confiadamente que se incline y tenga piedad (3). La mujer cananea pide a Jesús que tenga piedad (Mat_15:22-25). El publicano no se atrevía a levantar los ojos al cielo (Luc_18:10-14). Aún existen demasiados esclavos en nuestra tierra, que nos invitan a orar con este salmo.
