Salmo de confianza con matices sapienciales. «Vano» es cuanto se hace sin contar con Dios. Ni el trabajo afanoso ni la vigilia nocturna, ni madrugar o trasnochar, ni recurrir a otros dioses distintos al Dios verdadero dará su fruto (1s). Uno de los dones divinos, su «salario», son los hijos, fruto de la bendición divina. Los hijos, por lo demás, son ayuda, defensa y apoyo para los padres en distintas situaciones; sobre todo en aquellas en las que el padre es impugnado en la sede judicial: a las puertas de la ciudad (3-5). «Sin mí no pueden hacer nada», leemos en Jua_15:5. Es necesario que el cristiano se implique en la construcción de la ciudad terrestre, pero sin dejar a Dios al margen.
