Chapter II.

¹ and ¹⁷ Solomons labourers for the building of the Temple. ³ His embassage to Huram for workemen and prouision of stuffe. ¹¹ Huram sendeth him a kinde answere.
1 And Solomon determined to build an house for the Name of the Lord, and an house for his kingdome.
2 And Solomon told out threescore and tenne thousand men to beare burdens, and fourescore thousand to hewe in the mountaine, and three thousand and sixe hundred to ouersee them.
3 And Solomon sent to [ Or, Hiram, 1Ki_5:1.] Huram the king of Tyre, saying, As thou diddest deale with Dauid my father, and diddest send him Cedars to builde him an house to dwell therein, euen so deale with me.

[Preparation for the Temple.]

4 Behold, I build an house to the name of the Lord my God, to dedicate it to him, and to burne before him [ Hebrew: incense of spices.] sweet incense, and for the continuall shew-bread, and for the burnt offrings morning and euening, on the Sabbaths, and on the new Moones, and on the solemne feasts of the Lord our God. This is an ordinance for euer to Israel.
5 And the house which I build, is great: for great is our God aboue all gods.
6 [ 1Ki_8:27 ; 2Ch_6:18 .] But who [ Hebrew: hath retained, or obtained strength.] is able to build him an house, seeing the heauen, and heauen of heauens cannot conteine him? who am I then that I should build him an house? saue onely to burne sacrifice before him?
7 Send me now therefore a man, cunning to worke in gold and in siluer, and in brasse, and in yron, and in purple and crimson, and blew, and that can skil to [ Hebrew: to graue grauings.] graue, with the cunning men that are with me in Iudah, and in Ierusalem, whome Dauid my father did prouide.
8 Send me also Cedar trees, firre trees, and [ Or, Al. muggim, 1Ki_10:11 .] Algume trees, out of Lebanon: (for I know that thy seruants can skill to cut timber in Lebanon) and behold, my seruants shalbe with thy seruants,
9 Euen to prepare me timber in abundance: for the house which I am about to build, shalbe [ Hebrew: great and wonderfull.] wonderfull great.
10 And behold, I will giue to thy seruants the hewers that cut timber, twentie thousand measures of beaten wheat, and twentie thousand measures of barley, and twentie thousand baths of wine, and twentie thousand baths of oyle.
11 Then Huram the king of Tyre answered in writing, which hee sent to Solomon: Because the Lord hath loued his people, hee hath made thee King ouer them.

El trabajará con tus obreros y con los de David, mi señor, tu padre. 14Manda tú, pues, mi señor, a tus siervos el trigo y la cebada, el aceite y el vino que has ofrecido. 15Nosotros cortaremos en el Líbano toda la madera que necesites y la pondremos en balsas para llevarla por mar hasta Jope, y tú la harás llevar de allí a Jerusalén. 16 Salomón hizo el censo de todos los extranjeros que había en la tierra de Israel, después del hecho por David, su padre, y fueron hallados ciento cincuenta y tres mil seiscientos. 17Destinó de ellos setenta mil para los transportes, y ochenta mil para las canteras en los montes, y tres mil seiscientos capataces para vigilar a los obreros.

El autor sigue el lugar paralelo de i Re, que a veces amplía (v.2-15) o abrevia (16-17).

Salomón se prepara para edificar el templo. Se tiene en vista la edificación de un templo y un palacio, pero al omitir los detalles del palacio (1 Rey. 7:1-12) el cronista se fija en el templo. Crón. también omite 1 Rey. 5:3-5, dado que ya dio las razones por las que David no pudo edificar el templo (1 Crón. 17; 22:7-10; 28:2, 3).

En medio de los dos anuncios sobre la mano de obra que Salomón utilizó se encuentran las dos cartas que se mandaron él e Hiram, rey de Tiro. La obra en la que se le pide a Hiram que ayude es algo nuevo, y en la escala más grande posible; pero para lo que será no es nada nuevo; a saber, la antigua religión de Israel. Las observancias antiguas están presentes (4; ver Exo. 30:7, 8; 40:23; Núm. 28-29), los mismos materiales que antes (7; ver Exo. 35:35), y hasta una contraparte del supervisor original: el artesano Oholiab (13, 14; ver Exo. 35:34). (Los detalles, por ej. en los vv. 10, 14, 18, difieren de los paralelos en 1 Rey. 5:11, 13; 7:14; parece que de vez en cuando el cronista usa diferentes fuentes. Si Salomón usó mano de obra israelita o no, ver sobre 1 Rey. 5:13-18.)

Es otra de las características del cronista el darnos las palabras de Hiram en los vv. 11, 12: tal como las de la reina de Saba en 9:8, muestran al mundo de afuera reconociendo que la presencia y la bendición de Dios descansan en Israel cuando el escogido rey de Dios gobierna.

Huram... Aunque tanto Hiram como Huram son lecturas variantes del mismo nombre fenicio, los masoretas prefirieron la variante Huram, de tal manera que incluso en los vv. en que aparece Hiram → 2Sa 5:11; 1Cr 14:1 (Ketib); 2Cr 4:11 (Ketib); 2Cr 9:10 (Ketib), propusieron la lectura Huram (Qere) → §308.

Preparativos. El capítulo describe la correspondencia diplomática entre salomón y Jirán, rey de Tiro. En esta correspondencia se resalta que para la construcción del Templo, la dirección artística (2,12s) y la mano de obra eran extranjeras (2,16). Se respeta el modelo entregado por Dios a David. El versículo 2,11 hace una ligera mención a la construcción del palacio real (1Re_5:21).
