Proverbios 20,1-30
Chapter XX.
1 Wine is a mocker, strong drinke is raging: and whosoeuer is deceiued thereby, is not wise.
2 [ Pro_19:12; Pro_16:14.] The feare of a king, is as the roaring of a Lion: who so prouoketh him to anger, sinneth against his owne soule.
3 It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but euery foole will be medling.
4 [ Pro_20:4.] The sluggard will not plow by reason of the [ Or, winter.] cold; therefore shall he begge in haruest, and haue nothing.
5 [ Pro_18:4.] Counsell in the heart of man is like deepe water: but a man of vnderstanding will draw it out.
6 Most men will proclaime euery one his owne [ Or, bountie.] goodnes: but a faithfull man who can finde?
7 The iust man walketh in his integritie: [ Psa_112:2.] his children are blessed after him.
8 A king that sitteth in the throne of iudgement, scattereth away all euill with his eyes.
9 [ Psa_51:5; Job_14:4; 1Ki_8:46; 2Ch_6:36; Ecc_7:28.1; Joh_1:8.] Who can say, I haue made my heart cleane, I am pure from my sinne?
10 [ Deu_25:15; Pro_11:1; Pro_16:2.] [ Hebrew: a stone, and a stone.] Diuers weights, and diuers [ Hebrew: an ephah, and an ephah.] measures, both of them are alike abomination to the Lord.
11 Euen a childe is knowen by his doings, whether his worke be pure, and whether it be right.
12 [ Exo_4:11; Psa_94:9.] The hearing eare, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made euen both of them.
13 [ Pro_19:15; Pro_12:11.] Loue not sleepe, lest thou come to pouertie: open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
14 It is nought, it is nought (saith the buyer:) but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
15 There is gold, and a multitude of Rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious iewell.
16 [ Pro_27:13.] Take his garment that is suerty for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.
17 [ Pro_9:17.] [ Hebrew: bread of lying, or falshood.] Bread of deceit is sweet to a
[False ballance.]
man: but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with grauell.
18 [ Pro_15:22 .] Euery purpose is established by counsell: and with good aduice make warre.
19 [ Pro_11:13 .] He that goeth about as a tale-bearer, reueileth secrets; therefore meddle not with him that [ Or, entiseth.] flattereth with his lippes.
20 [ Exo_21:17 ; Lev_20:9 ; Mat_15:4 .] Who so curseth his father or his mother, his [ Or, candle.] lampe shall be put out in obscure darkenesse.
21 An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning: but the ende thereof shall not be blessed.
22 [ Deu_32:35 ; Pro_17:13 ; Pro_24:29 ; Rom_12:17 ; 1Th_5:15 ; 1Pe_3:9 .] Say not thou, I will recompence euil: but wait on the Lord, and he shall saue thee.
23 [ Verse 10.] Diuers waights are an abomination vnto the Lord: and a [ Hebrew: ballances of deceit.] false ballance is not good.
24 [ Psa_37:23 ; Pro_16:9 ; Jer_10:23 .] Mans goings are of the Lord; how can a man then vnderstand his owne way?
25 It is a snare to the man who deuoureth that which is holy: and after vowes, to make inquirie.
26 [ Pro_20:8 ; Psa_101:5 , etc.] A wise king scattereth the wicked, & bringeth the wheele ouer them.
27 The spirit of man is the [ Or, lampe.] candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
28 [ Psa_101:1 ; Pro_29:14 .] Mercy and trueth preserue the king: and his throne is vpholden by mercy.
29 [ Pro_16:31 .] The glory of yong men is their strength: and the beautie of old men is the gray head.
30 The blewnes of a wound [ Hebrew: is a purging medicine against euill.] cleanseth away euill: so doe stripes the inward parts of the belly.
